it showed me, for the first time in concrete terms, just how far apart western and eastern cultures and thought patterns are.
I was completely taken back by the fact that not 1, not 1 eastern person I knew who saw the film knew what it was about,,,had no idea why the story was as it was. This appears again in the above posts.
Meanwhile, North American viewers were getting chills racing up and down their spines, there were sessions of intense feelings, guilt, pride, disappointment, shock,,,we saw our parents, brothers, sisters in these characters....and everyone awaits the sequel with most interest...
I am not saying that there is anything wrong with not understanding it, that's a cultural and historical issue, but that's when I gave up any idea that our cultures have any connection at all. They really don't, even if it looks like that on the surface.
Odd how something like a movie illustrates these things..
