A cleaner at a cinema in Bur Dubai has been accused of stealing a woman’s handbag. The bag contained a mobile phone and dhs1,500 in cash.
The case of the Bangladeshi woman was heard at Dubai Court of First Instance yesterday along with that of two compatriots who have been charged with handling the stolen mobile and assisting the defendant.
The bag’s owner, a 29-year-old Emirati woman, went to the cinema with her sister and said she lost her bag.
The police investigated and said the defendant found the bag and kept it, giving the phone to his compatriots.
A manager employed to prevent embezzlement at a Dubai company went on to steal from his firm, a court has been told.
The case was heard at Dubai Court of First Instance yesterday, when the court heard the defendant, who is British, was responsible for implementing measures at Istithmar World, an investment arm of Dubai World, to protect it from fraud.
But at the same time, he is accused of stealing $1,340,938 from the company. According to police reports the crime was discovered in 2008.
“We recruited the defendant as a manager in one of our companies in order to put regulations and measures in place to prevent the other managers and the employees from embezzling,” an official from Dubai World said in a statement. “We discovered that he had signed a document to transfer money to a company in the UK and then discovered that he owned 51 per cent of its shares.”
