when ladies used to travel from England to India at the time of the British Empire, I guess, they would book their tickets on the boat to ensure that they travelled out on the Port side of the boat, to avoid the sun, and their return on the Starboard side for the same reason.
Thus the expression POSH (Port Out, Starboard Home).
They would have been ladies with money and so I guess that's how our nowadays interpretation comes about. Posh.
