was when I advertised my little Austen Healy Sprite sports car for sale (it was a mess - I think the front of it had been replaced at some time) and no one answered the advert. Then one day someone DID !
He was soooooooo handsome. An Office in the Merchant Navy and he asked me to drive the car for him before he decided about it. (bit dumb I guess) Anyway, I drove the car around and he liked it and gave me a cheque for it. Said he'd pick it up a day or so later.
Fine. He came to pick up the car and invited me to the Cinema that night to see Dr Zhivago. I accepted.
He picked me up and had the hood (soft top) of the car down. Nice. But it started to rain and he had to try to get the hood of the car up. Bad. After a while he got the hood up and was back in the driving seat.
Window screen wipers ground to a halt. I was getting uncomfortable. I said they had always been ok.
Then the bonnet (bit over the engine for Americans) started to shake loose - it was buckled at each side. I got out to help sort things out.
The car was falling apart as I sat in it.
We eventually got to the cinema - although I have since watched Dr Zhivago on that occasion it was a complete blank! I couldn't remember anything about the film.
We drove home in silence and I just prayed his cheque had already been cashed into my bank account before I leapt out of the car when I got home.
