Ya'll have to pardon my lack of sympathy for the poor babies, I in fact do live and work in Qatar for 2.5 years now and I worked in KSA for almost 3 yrs, I also have worked in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas not to mention Alaska, Montana, Californicate, Mass., Florida the country of Cuba, So. Korea and played in the SE Asia wargames back in '68 & '69 in which we came in 2nd place although we were winning when I left (lol).
I might add that I work in the construction field and although I do not work outside hardly at all my employees do and they are Americans also. Try working 12 hrs a day outside here with no A/C. I agree Rita was bad but it was not like the world was coming to an end. There are many people who live & work in comparable conditions daily. You appear to have a lot of common sense so I am guessing that you weren't born with a silver spoon in your mouth.
This reminds me of the X generation kids working for me in Cuba and whining how hot it was, the Base CO would call off all work because of "heat" and then I would find them playing volley ball. It's seems it's only too hot when it involves work. They actually close schools in a lot of states now when teh A/C goes out...what does that teach the kids? that they don't have to work when it is hot?
Oh yeah..in Alaska the rule was at 35F below zero we got a helper, anything above that we worked alone and that includes when it was dark (all day). The school rule for kids was at 45f below zero the kids could be excused, anything above that was an absence and counted against you.
