Silver spoon...nah not born with one, but do remember polishing those darn things every Christmas when we used them for the holiday dinner...That's the reason mine are stainless!!!!!

yep...I grew up in Texas and we had no a/c in our schools...and I DO remember that only too well. Ours was a very old school(one of the last of the dinosaurs in the district...the school, not me!), which had really high ceilings to let the hot air rise and large windows to catch the breeze. When the school system, in its infinite wisdom, decided to put a/c in, they lowered the ceilings...then waited 4 years to put in the units...we about died every day from April until June, then it was worse in Sept until Nov. I also remember how difficult it was to pay attention when you are so hot you can't think straight and all you want to do is fall asleep due to the lack of energy. Again tho..I used to run track and track season was in the middle of summer...back then it was believed that you couldn't drink water and run or you'd cramp up. We weren't even allowed ice chips and had to sit on the bleachers in full sun and wait for our race. I had forgotten how miserable that was. We always had at least 1 person pass out at each race.

Problem is today that people have gotten used to the a/c and its difficult to adapt when you are thrown so quickly out into the heat for extended periods of time. Not saying it can't be done but its not done well, healthwise. It just about kills me to see the workers out in the heat in Doha, working. I feel for them..

Ya'll have to pardon my lack of sympathy for the poor babies, I in fact do live and work in Qatar for 2.5 years now and I worked in KSA for almost 3 yrs, I also have worked in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas not to mention Alaska, Montana, Californicate, Mass., Florida the country of Cuba, So. Korea and played in the SE Asia wargames back in '68 & '69 in which we came in 2nd place although we were winning when I left (lol).

I might add that I work in the construction field and although I do not work outside hardly at all my employees do and they are Americans also. Try working 12 hrs a day outside here with no A/C. I agree Rita was bad but it was not like the world was coming to an end. There are many people who live & work in comparable conditions daily. You appear to have a lot of common sense so I am guessing that you weren't born with a silver spoon in your mouth.

This reminds me of the X generation kids working for me in Cuba and whining how hot it was, the Base CO would call off all work because of "heat" and then I would find them playing volley ball. It's seems it's only too hot when it involves work. They actually close schools in a lot of states now when teh A/C goes out...what does that teach the kids? that they don't have to work when it is hot?

Oh yeah..in Alaska the rule was at 35F below zero we got a helper, anything above that we worked alone and that includes when it was dark (all day). The school rule for kids was at 45f below zero the kids could be excused, anything above that was an absence and counted against you.

Oh God, the hurricanes of '05 still cause nightmares for me. We were so lucky for Katrina, only lost power for 14 hours and no damage. While around the corner people were without any power for a week. Then came Rita, which caused a lot more damage in my area of Louisiana. I think if anything looks like it even might come this way again, I am heading out of town. Looks like Erin is giving Texas a pretty good soaking that you guys really don't need.

Getting ready to crash now, it has been a long day. Look forwarding to meeting up with you tomorrow. Send me a PM or give me a call in the morning. Be careful driving.

when Rita hit..its was 105 and the humidity was unbearable. No places were open for business, as in hotels because they had evacuated also due to the storm.

Until you are subjected to those conditions, you can't understand(unless you live in Doha with no A/C or clean water, in August) It would be like having to sleep and live in your car for days...with no A/C and there was a horrible traffic jam of the evacuees all the way from Galveston up to Ft Worth/Dallas that lasted over 24 hours..inching its way out of the hurricane's path. Lots of Houston and the surrounding areas lost power for days due to the subsequent storms then were subjected to a "rolling" brown outs to save electricity for emergencies.

I was one of the lucky ones...I had left just the day before, on a cruise to Cozumel...5 day one..turned into a 10 day cruise because the port of Galveston was closed (even tho the hurricane didn't hit there..was predicted to and it was a forced evacuation) and we couldn't dock anywhere else. Reminded me of that old show Gilligan's Island..where they left on a 3 day cruise and got stranded forever...

Version 1:

O, I wish I was in the land of cotton

Old times there are not forgotten

Look away! Look away!

Look awayyyyyyyyyy! Dixie Land.

In Dixie Land where I was born in

Early on one frosty mornin'

Look away! Look away!

Look awayyyyyyyyyyy! Dixie Land.

Chorus:

O, I wish I was in Dixie!

Hooray! Hooray!

In Dixie Land I'll take my stand

To live and die in Dixie

Away, away,

Away down southhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, in Dixie!

Dars buckwheat cakes an' ingen batter, makes you fat or a little fatter,

Look away, look away, look away, Dixie land.

Den hoe it down and scratch your grabble

to Dixie's land

I'm bound to travel,

Look away, look away, look away Dixie land.

Chorus...

Check out this other version attributed to General Albert Pike, CSA:

Southrons, hear your country call you,

Up, lest worse than death befall you!

To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!

Lo! all the beacon-fires are lighted,--

Let all hearts be now united!

To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!

Advance the flag of Dixie! Hurrah! Hurrah!

In Dixie's land we take our stand, and live or die for Dixie!

To arms! To arms! And conquer peace for Dixie!

To arms! To arms! And conquer peace for Dixie

Hear the Northern thunders mutter!

Northern flags in South winds flutter!

To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!

Send them back your fierce defiance!

Stamp upon the cursed alliance!

To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!

Chorus:

Fear no danger! Shun no labor!

Lift up rifle, pike, and saber!

To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!

Shoulder pressing close to shoulder,

Let the odds make each heart bolder!

To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!

Chorus

How the South's great heart rejoices

At your cannon's ringing voices!

To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!

For faith betrayed and pledges broken,

Wrongs inflicted, insults spoken,

To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!

Chorus

Strong as lions, swift as eagles,

Back to their kennels hunt these beagles!

To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!

Cut the unequal bonds asunder!

Let them hence each other plunder!

To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!

Chorus

Swear upon your country's altar

Never to submit or falter--

To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!

Till the spoilers are defeated,

Till the Lord's work is completed!

To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!

Chorus

Halt not till our Federation

Secures among earth's powers its station!

To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!

Then at peace and crowned with glory,

Hear your children tell the story!

To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!

Chorus

If the loved ones weep in sadness,

Victory soon shall bring them gladness--

To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!

Exultant pride soon vanish sorrow;

Smiles chase tears away to-morrow!

To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!

Thanks Alexa..NOW I have this song in my head all night long...but that's alright..its one of my favorites..my mama used to sing it while she cleaned house and I was little. She only sang the first version...never had heard the other one until I looked it up.

No more tears

(little birdie perhaps?) that some folks on here are repeat offenders...personally I believe they have no life of their own and are miserably unhappy so they want to spread their shallow little minds and misery with others. Makes them feel bigger and more important, not as microscopic as they are in actuality.

That's alright...Bissou and others have gotten their 15 minutes of fame, negative as it is...and yea..i'm sure this is the same person as on here also, just different name.....must be crowded in that head..kinda scary...there IS medication for that nowdays.
