Agree with the assessment of American and British 4X4s although I can't judge the LR3 except to say it weighs nearly 3 tons which is too much. I know the Discovery II first-hand and it was rubbish.
The American car industry is unhealthy for a reason. The design and quality of their cars lag far behind the competition. You will see a lot of H2s and H3s but that's the novelty aspect and "pimp my ride" feel. The interiors are still too plasticky, the fit and finish gapes at you in places, the ride of the Jeeps is a prescription for Dramamine and they will end up creaking and squeaking.
If I had to pick an American 4X4 I'd choose the Wrangler. Not very practical and quite thirsty but a lot of power and fun. Good for a single person or child-less couple.
Many Americans drive American cars in Doha. American cars are more popular in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
The problem isn't with the Americans, it's the American car industry's mentality. BMW's chief designer is an American and look at BMW, one of the few remaining small and independent manufacturers turning out regular profits.
The Korean cars are much cheaper, they come fully-loaded and they have a service and warranty package that is absolutely awesome, no one comes close. But they use some old components (retired Mercedes Benz engines) and a few years down the road they become ragged.
Fords are sold in Qatar.
All European brands are available; Volvo, Saab (re-badged GM car), VW, BMW, Mercedes.
