I bought a Jeep 3 years ago, in the emirates, and I had many problems with it. The rear differential started making an awful sound, and the front brake disks needed (first) machining and eventually replacing. The AC gave me problems at the end of the 3rd year, and I ran into some odd electrical problems.
Not sure if I had a bad one, or if it is Jeeps in the region, in general. I sold it though, as all my friends who had older Jeeps said getting them serviced after the warranty was VERY expensive.
I am renting at the moment, while I shop around, but I am thinking about the new KIA Sorrento, it seems really nice and far cheaper than similarly swank 4x4s. Anyone have one? Comments? I plan to be here for 5 years and would like to have a nice ride with a warranty that will cover me for as much of that as possible.
I bought myself a Jeep Grand Cherokee here about 7 months ago. It's a Laredo with a 4,7L V8, and it cost me about QR 120,000. I'm very satisfied with it, both for city driving, and for the dunes.
Agree with the assessment of American and British 4X4s although I can't judge the LR3 except to say it weighs nearly 3 tons which is too much. I know the Discovery II first-hand and it was rubbish.
The American car industry is unhealthy for a reason. The design and quality of their cars lag far behind the competition. You will see a lot of H2s and H3s but that's the novelty aspect and "pimp my ride" feel. The interiors are still too plasticky, the fit and finish gapes at you in places, the ride of the Jeeps is a prescription for Dramamine and they will end up creaking and squeaking.
If I had to pick an American 4X4 I'd choose the Wrangler. Not very practical and quite thirsty but a lot of power and fun. Good for a single person or child-less couple.
Many Americans drive American cars in Doha. American cars are more popular in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
The problem isn't with the Americans, it's the American car industry's mentality. BMW's chief designer is an American and look at BMW, one of the few remaining small and independent manufacturers turning out regular profits.
The Korean cars are much cheaper, they come fully-loaded and they have a service and warranty package that is absolutely awesome, no one comes close. But they use some old components (retired Mercedes Benz engines) and a few years down the road they become ragged.
Fords are sold in Qatar.
All European brands are available; Volvo, Saab (re-badged GM car), VW, BMW, Mercedes.
you have risen really important issue regarding the american 4x4 cars and i will really appreciate anyone who's capable to reponse on sa_japie comments.
The comment has been made to steer clear of American & British 4x4's. I couldn't agree more on the British - Discovery, but am a little confused about the American vehicles. With a lot of ex-pats around I would have thought that the like of the Chevrolets and Jeeps would be very popular or am I mistaken? A Chevvy Blazer or equivalent or the Grand Cherokee or Cherokee would surely be a reasonable alternative to the Nissan Pathfinder or Prado? What would there prices be as a comparison to the Nissan and Toyota? Are there any Fords in Qatar at all?
Obviously the Korean 4x4s would be a lot cheaper, but how do they compare in popularity? Hyundai Terracan / Sante Fe / Tuscon or the Kia range - not sure what they would be called there.
What European brands are available?
Hopefully there is somebody out there that will be able to answer some of these questions and add something to this thread.
Oh I forgot about this thread. Yes the price for Prado is around 130K if you negotiate. And hey, what's that?? "For your wife just to send your kids to school or to the market for food, get the smallest possible car like tiida or anything cheap" - that is so sexist and cheap! I would divorce a husband like that on the spot. How do your wives tolerate you???
For BMW the plan is effective from the date of the vehicle sale from the showroom, so if you buy a 2 year old BMW then you'll pay the same amount for BSI (QAR 5000) but it's only good for 3 years.
Second car for the lady of the house, may i suggest a toyota camary, honda accord or nissan altima. spoil her and get used bmw or merc, u can get a good one for around QR 100,000. Cheaper nice cars.. hmm nissan pathfinder... a used H3 hummer...
If you have the budget for a new German car go with BMW.
They have a service plan, BSI, BMW Service Inclusive, where for 5 years and costing about QAR 5000 ($1500) they will take care of everything in the car except for tyres. This is from wiper blades, oil changes, filters, brake pads, discs, etc. This is completely separate from the 3 year warranty.
Toyota Land Crusier and Toyoto CAmary nothing else holds value, its like money in the bank. Plus cheap maintenance, if they ever break down.
Stay away from american and english rubbish. Small cars are not very ideal for a family. God forbid your family be caught in a car accident in their little Nissan or Honda with a Land Crusier that was going over 100 miles an hour.. get my point.. in a country where 4x4 is king, u need a 4x4.
hi what model did you get and what did you pay? the biggest Prado is a 4L where the cruiser has a 4.8L or bigger if i am correct. i know the 4L has got a lot to offer in the dunes, have you been there?

i do not know exactly but can give you fairly good ball park figures (you will find that the cars over here do not necessarily have all the extras and leather seats is not practical in this environment):
the cruiser will cost from about QR150 000 for the base line model to QR200 000 for the more luxurious models.
the Prado will cost about QR115 000 for the 2.7L 4 cylinder to about QR135 000 for the 4L six cylinder model.
the Nissan pathfinder, 4L six cylinder cost QR119 000 for the mid range model, the one with the sun roof will set you back about
QR125 000
the Nissan patrol as well as the armada is about QR165 000
I will be relocating to doha with family in couple weeks from USA and thinking of shipping our 2006 Honda Odyssey Minivan. The cost for shipping is about USD 4,000 plus all the hastle with paper work.
Has anyone shipped a car reclently to doha?
What is the process?
Is it worth it?
Should I sell it in the USA and buy new one in Qatar?
Does anyone have an idea about cost on Honda Odyssey minivan in QAtar?
yes it is called the prado land cruiser, in my view it is two different models. the prado is also very good in the duns and in general, especially the 4L, six cylinder prado, and is also very popular with expats, not so much with the locals. it is definitely cheaper, and will also have good resale value. but the big daddy is still the land cruiser. i got myself the Nissan pathfinder, also a very good buy if you are considering something cheaper
the Toyota land cruiser is by far the favorite with the Nissan patrol a distant second. if you can afford them you will not be to far off the mark. the durability and quality of the land cruiser is legendary in this country, do yourself a favor and go to the dunes to see how the locals drive these cars, you will not believe what these 4X4 can take and what they can do. the patrol is also very good or even better in the dunes, a lot depend on the power of the car, but it does not have the track record in terms of quality and reliability.
Thank you for your useful information u have provided in your reply. i really appreciate your efforts. i will take your advice and will go for BMW 530i but i would like first to have an idea about it's price. however, i will contact the persons you provided in your reply and will check about the car price.
If you are going to go for a 2001 5 series, the old shape, I suggest you go for the 530i which is a more complete car unless your budget doesn't permit it. Consumer Reports gave the 2001 530i its highest car rating ever. Make sure you check the instrument cluster for problems and whatever you decide try to get one with a full BMW service history to make sure it's been properly and regularly maintained.
GOOD RESALES VALUE STILL MEANS 35% OFF FROM THE ORIGINAL PRICE FOR A 3 YEARS CAMRY EASILY.
for your wife just to send your kids to school or to the market for food, get the smallest possible car like tiida or anything cheap, the depreciated value is not much (though the % still remain same), not mini cooper though.
i am going to move to qatar and i am thinking to buy BMW 525i 2001 model. what do you think about that and do u have any idea about the price of the car? maintenance workshop?

Good idea.
Saudi Arabia is a bigger market hence lower prices.
thanks
in Saudi Prado 2.7 starts from SAR 93,000 (appr. QAR 90,000)
i'm thinking of buying one here and take it to Doha
Prado range: 105,000 - 120,000
No idea about volvo but add a minimum of 20,000 to the top end Prado price.
Hi guys,
how much is Volvo XC90 -- 2.5L in Doha?
and Prado 2.7L? basic models
Qatarcat, thanks for the information and the hints about how to treat our wives :-)

hi
how much it will cost to buy Nissan Altima 2004 Model?
how much it will cost to buy Honda Accord 2004 Model?
how much it will cost to buy Toyota Camry 2004 Model?
i will appreciate if u could specify the car specifications. i.e engine size, and other options.
thanks alot for your help

Used BMW or Merc, do they still qualify for good service plan or is it really expensive to maintain

Great deal.
How much money it will cost to buy land crusier 2002,2003 models?
Thats a very good point you made there. 4x4 is the way to go for a family. I am looking for a second car for my car
Toyota Land Crusier and Toyoto CAmary nothing else holds value, its like money in the bank. Plus cheap maintenance, if they ever break down.

I just got one, and I am in love with it already. Landcruiser engine with a lighter body - it's a rocket! Great for the dunes, too. Oh, and pretty :P

I thought the TOYOTA PRADO is also considered a smaller version of the cruiser. May be its a cheaper alternative

The Fortuner looks very nice, is it a good car? Do you know how much is it brand new or used 2 yrs old
Is it spacious from inside?
THanks
No Highlander here, your choices are Land Cruiser, Prado, Fortuner and RAV4.
Thanks a lot for all the help. So Audi is out of the question. I guess its BMW or Toyota.
Do you have Toyota Highlander in Qatar or not. We have it here in Canada and its very nice in between cruiser and Rav

Hi,
i am going to move to qatar and i am thinking to buy BMW 525i 2001 model. what do you think about that and do u have any idea about the price of the car? maintenance workshop?
please advise,
Toyota is king in Qatar, no other car has a better resale value.
BMW is a distant second.
Avoid Audi as it has a limited market and you could be stuck with it for a while after putting it up for sale.
In terms of 4X4s, the Japanese ones are good if you want to use them for offroading as well as city driving.
AVOID Land Rover.
