During the holy month of Ramadan, in order to stay healthy, it is important to keep yourself hydrated.

Water is one of the most important components of the human body representing 60 to 70 percent of the human body weight. Not drinking enough water after breaking the fast makes fasting not only more difficult but can also be dangerous because of the serious health risks which come with dehydration.

The following tips can help avoid dehydration:

Drink between 8 to 12 cups of water

One of the tips that can come in handy is that you can think of one of the easiest ways to measure your water intake. Pick your favorite bottle, keep a jug, and glass near you!

The best thing to do is to try drinking two cups of water with dates when you are breaking the fast and divide water intake instead of drinking a larger quantity in one go.

It is preferable to drink lukewarm water as the body can absorb it quickly.

Do not use salt and spices excessively

It is advised to avoid food with a lot of spices during Iftar as it increases the body’s need for water. When cooking, reduce the amount of salt. You can also alter salt with vinegar in your salads.

Avoid sugary drinks

Processed drinks or carbonated drinks such as are generally high in sugar. Drinking those during Iftar can cause bloating and indigestion. Instead, drink lots of water, freshly squeezed juice, or yogurt drinks.

Avoid caffeine

It is recommended to avoid caffeinated drinks including tea, coffee, energy, and carbonated drink as caffeine is a natural diuretic because it increases fluid loss and thirst.

If you crave for a hot drink, have a caffeine-free infusion instead or lower the caffeine intake by drinking green tea.

Alter sweets with fruits

Fruits are not only high in water, but they are also high in fibre which helps you stay full. Eating sweets increases thirst as they contain a large amount of sugar. Make a list of your favorite fruits now!
