Ramadan is fast approaching, and it is a time for connecting with your spiritual side. Fasting during Ramadan can be spiritually rewarding but did you also know it can be beneficial for your health if done correctly. However, what you eat first when breaking your fast plays a crucial role in replenishing energy levels and aiding digestion. Here’s how to break your fast the right way.

Start with Dates and Water

Traditionally, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) broke his fast with dates and water, and following in his footsteps, Muslims around the world break their fast with dates. But breaking your fast with dates and water is not just tradition but can be beneficial too. Dates are rich in natural sugars, which provide an instant energy boost, while water helps rehydrate the body.

Have a Light and Warm Starter

After dates and water, opt for a light, warm soup or broth. Lentil soup or vegetable soup is a great choice as it is easy on the stomach and helps prepare your digestive system for the main meal.

Avoid Heavy and Greasy Foods Immediately

Jumping straight into fried or heavy foods can lead to bloating and discomfort. Instead, wait a few minutes before having a balanced meal with proteins, healthy carbs, and fiber.

Go for Easily Digestible Proteins

Grilled chicken, fish, or legumes are excellent sources of protein that will be easy to digest. Pair them with whole grains like brown rice or quinoa for a steady release of energy.

Include Hydrating Foods

Cucumbers, watermelon, and yogurt-based drinks like Laban or Ayran can help replenish lost fluids and electrolytes, keeping you hydrated for longer.

Control Portion Sizes

Want to avoid the post-Iftar sluggishness? Eat in moderation. Don't go overboard while eating during iftar. Start slow, chew well taking time, and give your body time to process the food before going for seconds.

Eat Slowly

It takes the body about 20 minutes to register that it is full, so chew well and eat slowly. Give your digestive system a chance to process the food, this will also support your metabolism and control weight gain.

Finish with a Herbal Tea

Ending your meal with peppermint or chamomile tea can aid digestion and prevent bloating, helping you feel light and comfortable.

By following these simple steps, you can break your fast in a healthy and effective way, ensuring you stay energized and feel good throughout Ramadan.
