Earth Hour was famously started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia in 2007.
Since then it has grown to engage more than 7000 cities and towns worldwide to raise awareness about climate change.
Earth Hour is held worldwide annually encouraging individuals, communities, households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour.
The event will be at The Pearl on Saturday March 28 from 8:30pm to 9:30pm as a symbol for commitment to the planet
The Pearl Qatar will witness this global event for the fifth consecutive year since 2011.
All unnecessary lights in the Porto Arabia district will be dimmed or turned off including towers & walkway.
A range of solar lamps will be led around the pearl, shaping the Earth Hour logo, which is the number "60".
The Pearl-Qatar’s Environment Department is also launching a competition for the 10 best environmental slogans, while the winners will participate in planting a tree on the island’s Grand Park with their slogan and author’s name imprinted on a specially crafted placard.
Submissions will be received by e-mail on “[email protected]” or through The Pearl-Qatar’s social media channels on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram no later than March 14 to allow time for the judging panel to select winners.
Winners of the best environment slogans will also receive a certificate acknowledging their effort with details of their tree.
The information will also be disseminated on The Pearl-Qatar’s social media platforms to announce the benefit of this exercise. [Sharq]
