Speed-limit reduced to 80 kmph on Doha-Shamal Expressway

The Traffic Department has reduced the speed limit from 100 kmph to 80 temporarily on the Doha-Shamal Expressway to monitor any changes in the traffic flow and accidents.

According to the department, the decision aims to reduce accidents as high speed causes car to pile up.

Residents said they were surprised and disappointed by the decision because they were expecting the department to increase speed limit to solve the problem of traffic jams, according to The Peninsula.

Many said the decision aimed to collect more fines and demanded that authorities look at options to reduce traffic congestions.

Did you notice the change in speed-limit? Drive safe, QLers!

the only way to fix the express way it to properly fix the Salwa Road & D ring road exits and implement a proper driving test. They keep trying to fix the result not the problem itself

Good decision 20 km less will not effect any traffic conjunction, an accident with 80 km speed and 100 km speed having big difference. this can save lot of lives, this was my suggestion long years ago through Gulf times. Bravo. where these people are going like a jet and what they finally gain other than loosing others precious life?!!

you carzy mnapin now most of the schools are having holidays, that is why you went early than before.

it should be depend upon the vehicle type for the speed limits, for trucks and buses should be 80 and other vehicles 100/120.

The speed limit is not the problem. The main reason is rash driving by few and tail-gating which is the main reason of accident. Of course the phone menace cannot be ignored.

Reducing speed is not ideal solution. Need wider exit. More tracks to accomadate the exit traffic.

Next, traffic authority need to fix the speed sign over speed reader' because some drivers are not bother about speed limit signs. Once they reach to the reader they slow down to 80 kph even the road is 120 kph. This will affect those who are in proper speed.

The main cause of traffic problems on Al Shamal road are the construction vehicles. Rather than reducing the speed limit for all vehicles, separate speed limit should be imposed. For heavy vehicles and buses including big pickups, the speed should be fixed at 80Km/h and they should be allowed to drive only on the slow lane. The other vehicles should be allowed to drive at 100Km/h. This is the common practice.

Most blue collar trucks and those run down small pick-ups, namely the ones with busted tail lights etc.. go 60 KMH anyway. Great idea now they probably now drive at 40 KMH. I never know why they drive so slow? Maybe it's because there vehicles are in such disrepair and speedometer stopped working a long time ago.

However, today I could not notice this at the begin while driving on shamal. Most of the accidents happen due to careless driving. Few locals do not care speed limits, traffic rules or discipline on roads at all.

Low speed limits mean more congestion, more frustrated drivers and more time spent on road lowering productivity and increasing pollution.

80 kph is extremely slow for an highway.

A good move and makes perfect sense, slower traffic means less serious accidents and less time to clear the road when an accident happens. This translates into less interruption in traffic flow. It may still be congested but at least not totally halted.

This road is very busy with so many exits and merge areas, this makes a 100km/h a bit too much. Besides, I am sure the reduction in speed limit affects only a small stretch of the road that may be close to 10km.

It makes a very slight difference in time needed to travel that short distance...do the math... it takes 7.5 minutes to travel 10km going 80km/h while it take 6 minutes going at 100km/h...I am fine loosing a couple extra minutes of my time if it means I will be driving on a safer road.

Good job traffic department! Keep up the good work. Irresponsible drivers need tougher rules.

I had noticed this yesterday and I was surprised... I'm new to Doha so I try to stick to limits.....I was a bit confused yesterday as 2,days ago I had travelled at 100km/h and as to why the board reads 80Km/h...Anyways authorities need to ease traffic congestion, changing speed limits wont be a great idea...
