Make a weekly meal plan and shop according to that plan. When you cook dal or anything like mutton curry make enough for 3 or 4 meals and then put it into containers and freeze it. Then all you need to do is take it out of the freezer in the morning. Use a rice cooker and eat rice instead of roti or chapati during the week (oh shock horror). Slow cookers work well too. Fry the onion, tomato and spices and then just put it into the slow cooker with the meat/dal, turn it on to low and when you get home in the evening it will be ready.
