I think it has a lot to do with the financial liabilities related to dowry, family honour related worries related to society and a sense of female children not being able to contribute to the family overall as much as a male child at a practical level. These negative perceptions make a girl child far less valued in these parts.

Moreover, this situation is compounded if there is illiteracy and poverty. I think it's one of the major ills comparable to medieval plague and needs to be cured by all means.
