I would like to add that the signal drop is in the iPhone 4 is about 20-25 db (decibel) when touching the antenna at the bottom.
If you are in an area with a signal of 51 db (lower number is better), and if you touch the iPhone 4 at the bottom left corner, your signal will drop to approx 71 db. You will not notice any signal bar change on the iPhone 4 even though the signal dropped by 20 db. This is because the value of the 5th bar on the iphone 4 has a range from 51 db to 76 db. The iPhone 4 will only drop to 4 bars when the signal goes over 76 db.

Also, you can check the signal level on the iPhone 4 using *3001#12345#* in the dialpad and hit call. Then look on the top left corner display.
