not necessarily britexpat. if the dogs were fully grown when the family got them, especially if they have been exposed to dog fights, i would agree. in this recent case, i think the dogs are already kept separate from the family but the boy wandered into their 'territory' so the attack happened. it is very suspicious though, for people to keep five pitbulls in a house with children. bad combination. and yes, if they keep that many pitbulls in the house they were probably used for fights.
however, pitbulls are the most misunderstood among the breeds of dogs and people would be losing out a lot on the experience of having them around if we all live in fear of them. one just has to know how to deal with them (and yes, you really deal with them differently than with other dogs) before deciding to get one. such violent acts by them are very sad indeed but since i had one good pitbull, i will always defend them. they're God's creatures too and God gave us one as a gift.
my pitbull used to love walks around the yard with my or my sister's hand in his wet mouth lightly secured by his teeth as a leash. he never hurt any of us, even when my then two-year old nephew used to throw things at him. he can be pretty lazy at times. he just gives us a bored look when we try to make him fetch and he has this nasty habit of stopping and sitting in the middle of the street when he doesn't feel like walking anymore and we can't carry him because he's very heavy. he's so scared of the sound of horns blowing and firecrackers on new year's celebrations and he's visibly shaking at that time of the year. when we walk with him outside, we can feel his...um, i don't know, power(?) among other dogs. when we walk our other dogs, stray dogs try to approach them and pick fights/mate with them. when we are with him, they just bark their lungs out and stay on the sides or hide somewhere. no one dares to approach. he did have one violent act when our oldest dog, a mongrel, attacked our cat who was outside in the middle of the night and he joined in being the buddies that they were and unfortunately gave the death blow before we can stop him. that told us that he still was an animal after all and was capable of doing such things.
still, he was a perfect guard dog even if he didn't bark much and he always knows when to offer a big hug and cuddle up when you're having a bad day. sorry for the long post. he was one of the best dogs we ever had and i hope no other incidences involving his kind happen again.
