Boy killed by family dogs.

Another tragedy. When will people learn ?

A 2-year-old boy was killed Thursday morning when he was attacked by his family's pit bulls.

Concord police Lt. Jim Lardieri said both police and animal control officers were called to a home in the 1700 block of Trail Creek Court at about 8:45 a.m. Thursday after receiving a report that a child had been attacked by dogs.

The boy reportedly wondered into the garage where the family kept their three pit bulls.

Once the toddler got in the garage, the dogs viciously attacked him, according to police.

Two adult relatives and one other young sibling were home at the time. They were not the boy's parents, but a grandmother and uncle.

Neighbors say an extended family lives in the home.

The boy was taken by ambulance to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to Lardieri.

The three dogs involved in the attack were taken away, as well as two other pit bulls the family had in the backyard.

Late Thursday all five dogs were euthanized. That included the two dogs who were not involved in the attack.

Police also arrested the boy's step grandfather, 52 year old Steven Hayashi. He was not home at the time of the attack, but faces child endangerment and possessing a mischievous animal that causes death or great bodily injury charges and is being held on $120,000 bail.

Contra Costa County Supervisor Susan Bonilla released a statement saying that the county's animal services department has no record of any complaints or previous problems involving the dogs.

brit, it is pimps and criminals who like to have those dogs to scare the competition away and make money on dog fights.. They therefore make those dogs behave as violent as possible.

You'll get me crucified :O)

Fro what i've seen, It's usually what we call the "Chavs" and working classes who own such dogs.. they are usually young or under 50 ..

they are indeed the most misunderstood of the canine breed.

Shell is correct in what she says too. I personally know all of her pitbulls as two of them are QAWS rescues and they have been brought up well socialised within the family, one is 11 years old and was rescued by Shell when she lived in Egypt.

One of them is such a big baby, he runs the other way when another dog approaches... seen by me to when I joined Shell for a day out on the beach with my GSD mix and Husky - Bandit ran from my husky... its was so funny...

I have been watching a programme on Animal Planet called Pitbulls and Parolees... its an awesome series that gives alot of insite to Pitbulls.

I feel so bad for this family that have lost their little one due to the attack, but I have to agree, just reading the article, it shows these dogs were poorly socialised and reading between the lines, they were probably bred for fighting - these two combinations are deadly.

^good idea :)

but what type of person usually keeps pitbulls in england britexpat? i'm curious.

yeah, they do look scary. which makes them all the more lovable when they're sweet and cuddly. i would admit to being scared of other people's dogs. but keeping them around unsupervised are really dangerous for small children not only because of the tendency to be violent but also because they are really stronger and heavier than many other breeds. even a playful push or tug by them is enough for an unguarded adult to lose balance and fall down.

we don't get to hear much about these stories though:

Sad end to the little life...RIP boy. Domestication of animals comes with its risks and sometimes people are not careful enough.

Thanks for the response and explanations. It's appreiated. The problem is that most (and I mean most) people would not be like you..

I must admit that whilst I can "put up" with most types of dogs, the Pit Bull scares the hell out of me. This is probably because of its looks and its "reputation".

In England, the Pit Bull has developed a certain reputation and is usually kept by a certain type of person -

not necessarily britexpat. if the dogs were fully grown when the family got them, especially if they have been exposed to dog fights, i would agree. in this recent case, i think the dogs are already kept separate from the family but the boy wandered into their 'territory' so the attack happened. it is very suspicious though, for people to keep five pitbulls in a house with children. bad combination. and yes, if they keep that many pitbulls in the house they were probably used for fights.

however, pitbulls are the most misunderstood among the breeds of dogs and people would be losing out a lot on the experience of having them around if we all live in fear of them. one just has to know how to deal with them (and yes, you really deal with them differently than with other dogs) before deciding to get one. such violent acts by them are very sad indeed but since i had one good pitbull, i will always defend them. they're God's creatures too and God gave us one as a gift.

my pitbull used to love walks around the yard with my or my sister's hand in his wet mouth lightly secured by his teeth as a leash. he never hurt any of us, even when my then two-year old nephew used to throw things at him. he can be pretty lazy at times. he just gives us a bored look when we try to make him fetch and he has this nasty habit of stopping and sitting in the middle of the street when he doesn't feel like walking anymore and we can't carry him because he's very heavy. he's so scared of the sound of horns blowing and firecrackers on new year's celebrations and he's visibly shaking at that time of the year. when we walk with him outside, we can feel his...um, i don't know, power(?) among other dogs. when we walk our other dogs, stray dogs try to approach them and pick fights/mate with them. when we are with him, they just bark their lungs out and stay on the sides or hide somewhere. no one dares to approach. he did have one violent act when our oldest dog, a mongrel, attacked our cat who was outside in the middle of the night and he joined in being the buddies that they were and unfortunately gave the death blow before we can stop him. that told us that he still was an animal after all and was capable of doing such things.

still, he was a perfect guard dog even if he didn't bark much and he always knows when to offer a big hug and cuddle up when you're having a bad day. sorry for the long post. he was one of the best dogs we ever had and i hope no other incidences involving his kind happen again.

RIP little one..

These types of dogs should be muzzled and kept seperately from the family..

i used to have a pitbull and he was one of the sweetest creatures who ever lived. it's sad that the boy died and people who do not take care of children and pets well should be held responsible. it's also sad that the image of this beautiful breed of dogs is tarnished further because of stupid people.

if people raise pets in a humane way, they will not behave like wild animals to humans around them. however, we should still keep in mind that they are animals after all and should be very cautious when children are around.

There are no really bad dogs....Just bad owners! I am sorry for this child. I hope that the owner of the dogs is punished in this case as well....as for the dogs they have already paid for their actions...

I also heard a story years back about a baby attacked and killed by a doberman owned by his parents. It was said that the dog felt extreme jealousy to the baby after the baby's birth.
