installing programs under linux has become a whole lot easier these days.
in the old days, you used to compile the stuff from the codes. not all you need is to choose it from the list or install the deb file (debian flavors).
having a biiig list of programs you can choose from is a plus for end users. all they need to do is search the keywords or browse then click and apply. the system downloads the latest version from the net and installes it for them.the plus side is that you do not need to search for updates for each program you install like in windows. the system does that automatically, so you always have the latest version.
