I'm not sure they're dying to be French.

It's just that some of them (I hope not plenty of them) would possibly don't want to be "looked down" even if they really can't do it professionally. That's why sometimes it's difficult for us to talk technical details to them as they may've taught we're "pulling them down" when we really were assisting them of explanations of certain situations.
