what many of you failed to mention is that Lebanon was actually occupied by france up until the late 40s and many schools used to teach french as a second language (and in some missionaries even as a first) maybe that's why many do speak french. Nowadays the shift in the younger generation is more toward english but surely this doesnt mean by any chance they want to be french or english!

one thing though, in light of all political and economical problems that we've been facing for so long, YES some lebanese look for a better chance in other countries especially europe and the states and truly admire the advanced way of life there.. this by no means an action to trade our identity rather than try to elevate our lifestyle, and for that YES we are guilty!

They defeated the whole egyptian army in 3 days (above 10,00 soldier), forced the government a decade later to sign peace treaty and now they are the offcial media representative for the Israeli Government.

I appreciate if you don't fantasize and try to accept your country reality and work hard to change it if you can.

So the answer for you're question is NO Lebanese are not dying..... and Lebanon will live for the end of the world..... and there will be no country Lebanese Free,...... we are already spread around the world, and where ever you go, no matter which country, you'll meet a Lebanese there.

these innocent questions have a devil inside , they are meant to insult one race ,

come on guys , go to latin america and see the succes of lebanese who migrated there

the difference of lebanese with other arabs they assimilate with other cultures easily and get integerated very well

i have met a lebanese family who took assylum in India during the internal problems, you will never identify them as arabs , they speak hindi and punjabi so well , i was ashamed

so praise them for mixing and adapting freely to other cultures

I like lebanese and thier culture and life style except those pointed shoes, they are scary , lol ....

tis' easy to distinguish them lebanese from others...first americans etc. don't wear deadly pointed shoes, don't sport greasy asphalted hair, except maybe way back in the 60's as sported by james dean. and they are more professional to asians and other races being a lot more around the world dealing and understanding other people's cultures and way of life-rather than racism- but don't worry ann, they like filipinas a lot more than filipinos...

i have no comment. lebanese must be having their own reasons for doing so...what matters is we respect each other as human beings!

No we are not dying to be french or English or anything else as a matter of fact....and please please do not compare us to Indians or swahilis or anybody else.We are a people who like to be open to everyone and we do like to have fun and spend our money on stupid and fancy things, we like to have plastic surgery because the possibility or improving ones self is there so we will take it which doesn't mean that we are trying to be somebody we're not and until we beg anybody for their money, i think noone has the right to even question why we do what we do.Yes we travel all over the world for opportunities. There are around 4 million lebanese in lebanon and 16 Million outside lebanon.

All the mojor night clubs, restaurants and events are run by lebanese and 90% of people who attend are lebanese so please crucify us for being outgoing and funloving.

One more thing, if you hate or are jealous of lebanese people that much, please stay out of our way and i would advise you not to mention this subject in a lebanese persons face because you will not like the outcome.

Lebanese people are dying to be any nationality and have any other passport than a Lebanese passport because they cant get visas easily to travel. So they are dying to be French, American, Australian, Brazilian, British, Canadian etc or any other nationality with a passport that enables them to travel freely!

Lebanese people are proud to be Lebanese. It's a great culture, with wonderful people. As in many other countries there are always some that give the rest a bad name!

Go to Lebanon and see for yourself what an amazing country it is, see how hospitable and great the Lebanese people are and then maybe you will be dying to be Lebanese!!!

Every country in the world has had 'lodgers' from time to time. If the Lebanese are wannabe French who are we to comment, if they want to be seen as European so be it.

Lebanese historically tend to migrate. Mainly due to economic or political reasons. Besides ambition and looking for better opportunities.

France is not the destination to die for. Although almost every person in the world is dying to visit France. Personally I did not like it and did not like the French people in general.

For your info. Most of the Lebanese migrants are mainly in Latin America.

Lebs i've come across all wannabe french, they just won't admit it - Fair enough its a second or third language but when with arabs or english they speak french its a bit strange. They disassociate themslves from middle east and attach themselvs to europe. They may have some european influence there but come on, ur not in europe, get over it!

Also, in my experience lebanese like to talk about their country and don't ask too many questions about where ur from - Fair enough i'm from uk, most people know whats going on there but my wife is from slovakia and when we first arrived in middle east and befriend some lebanese, not one question about her country/upbringing. Just chat about 'u know u can ski and sunbathe on beach in the same day in lebabnon?' Whopeee do, medal anyone?

I actually like the country, think the food is great but theres nothing more off-putting than someone who talks about themselves or their country all the time - get over yourselves lebanese!

We are very influenced by French culture... yet very Mediterranian in our mood.. very Arabs in roots... very modern in life style... very ambitious by heritage..

which make us very different, sometimes very criticized, some other times very liked...

But in no means we are dying to be French or any wannabe...

We are who we are.. which is by itself very justified if you take a look at our history and our nation's evolution.

I'm fine thank you :) How are you and the family doing?!

hmmm makes me english eh.. now i've begun to integrate a few hindi words.. am i Indian? or not yet :D

Catsniper: its true, Bonjour has become a more common practice than Marhaba and Merci in place of Shoukran.. but then we tend to say Sorry and excuse me; we tend to say Kefek/kefak instead of comment cava and how are you.. so you will know a true lebanese when he or she walks up to you and says:

Hi, Kefak/Kefek? Ca va?! (3 languages into one sentence)

It’s totally up to them what they want to be like, but yes I have seen most of them prefer ‘Bonjour’ than greetings in English / Arabic. Am I right QL leb folks?

Are we dying to be french? NO! do the majority speak french? YES. Are we considered a Francophone country? YES.

We were definitely influenced by the french when they occupied Lebanon, but that only enhanced our culture, it did not change it or make us wannabes.

We have been occupied by many different civilizations, and we have learned alot from each and integrated certain things into our society and system, but we have not become wanna bes to any.

Now english is becoming as integrated into our Lebanese society whether in education or otherwise as much as french.

I am Lebanese.. I dont even know how to speak French.. but I am very fluent in English.. so what does that make me?

It is true - Lebanese are one of the most ambitious people in this region.

And they are the only ones who defeated Israel In the world.

And they are one of the few in the world speaks 4 languages fluently: Arabic, French, English, Armenian (some of them).

And they are loved by the region top governments because they spend money, smart, enhance lifestyle and encourage tourism.

FS..good point.. But the fact is that British Raj in India has left a long lasting legacy in India of Today. The British established democracy for Indians (even you might not agree on that) also by abolishing of the Mughal Monarchy. So even if you don't want to be British, the influence of 200 years of British rule in India is too much to be ingnored.

We Brits are also influenced by India, and as a proof I can verify that Curry has become the unofficial National Dish of the UK...lol

Matter of personal choice.

Generally using USD, life style and western culture all around Beyrouth (Beirut),

Doing nose surgery (naturally big) to look more westernised than arab nationals.

Israel soft target attacks....bad neighbour Syria, GCC nation not very supportive.....so obviously France...could be a better solution.

Well, as we all know that LEBANESE have a Blonde look ,very pretty & handsome ppl & they do lead a very stylish life too. That's why they try their level best to be known as French,American etc

.

Moreover, they did seek independence from FRENCH in 1943 adn they withdrew their forces in 1946 from lebanon. That's why they are so much influenced by them & try to learn French Language & their lifestyle too. I think they do have have french as their 2nd official language after arabic.[I'm not sure]
