jjj75. In my earlier posts on this thread I noted the existence of one particular 'Mafia' and my own experiences of them.

As you rightly say, many people in Qatar are in fact employed in positions well beyond their capabilities. This is because the 'Mafia' is in a position to push through their selected recruits without regard to proven experience or qualification.

I still have a copy of the CV of one particular successful applicant, including his 'Degree', and I can assure you, based on my own experience, that no self respecting company would have recruited him as anything more than a trainee, and yet he managed to secure a fairly senior position within this particular company.

Very soon after my own recruitment, it became obvious to me that many other people within my department were either under qualified or felt so secure and protected in their positions that they saw no need to make the effort to do their jobs properly or efficiently.

But the thing that shocked and disturbed me most of all was the lack of proper administrative, communication, reporting & working procedures, the failure to provide job descriptions, and the total lack of any effective management.

As a Brit, I'm ashamed to say that one of the senior managers of my department was British and a long time employee of the company. I had some harsh words with him in the early days of my employment, and explained to him exactly what was going on his dept and who was behind it.

I also told him that if it continued then I would not be staying in Qatar very long. He could not possibly deny (and he did not deny) the truth of what I was saying, and I think he was a bit overwhelmed and embarrassed by my outburst. He did not reprimand me at all, his only response was a slightly sick smile and an embarrassed shrug.

I was able to prove to this guy that 75% of his staff were incompetent and/or obstructive to those of who were interested in doing the job properly. But he did NOTHING to improve the situation and he made no attempt to control the people responsible for screwing up his department.

I've been around a bit and I've seen some fairly hair raising stuff, but I've never experienced a more ridiculous and frustrating situation in my life.

I did gain some satisfaction occasionally when I was able to embarrass some of these comedians, but it was a truly horrible experience and one that I would not wish to repeat.

Yes, it's a good idea to have a mix of races within these companies. But it should be a fairly EQUAL mix so that one race is not able to dominate all the other races and create a 'Mafia'.

Good and fair management is also required in order to prevent this type of situation arising.
