Because yes, as as Mr. Paul said maybe mandarin has more native speakers than french....but its how useful that language is (by seeing how many people learn it as their primary second language)....so if no one outside of China speaks mandarin, it is not as uself as say french (which has a lot of countries that speak it as a second language for example).
In that regard, English is THE international language....not to mention of official international language of almost everything from avaiation regulations, to business, to the ineternet, etc...etc...
So the most important language is English and anything esle you can pick up on top of that is an added bonus imho.
