hey DG & Richard, u've been violating the rules of hijacking swissy's thread.  Go make your own thread for English grammar, spelling etc.  i guess everyone would benefit since I noticed too that many Q'lers have trouble in spelling, grammars, etc.etc and i guess i'm not exempted as well.

But I would say that Internationally, French and Spanish are the most important languages after English to know.

But that's just my opinion, others may disagree.

Because yes, as as Mr. Paul said maybe mandarin has more native speakers than french....but its how useful that language is (by seeing how many people learn it as their primary second language)....so if no one outside of China speaks mandarin, it is not as uself as say french (which has a lot of countries that speak it as a second language for example).

In that regard, English is THE international language....not to mention of official international language of almost everything from avaiation regulations, to business, to the ineternet, etc...etc...

So the most important language is English and anything esle you can pick up on top of that is an added bonus imho.

Stay safe all.

My roomate in Canada during my university years (who was also my best man btw) comes from a family positively gifted with languages.

The guy is of Lebanese and Czech decent (father and mother respectively) and they had a house in spain where they summered every year. As a result, he could speak: English, French, Spanish, Arabic, and Czech.

His mom could speak all the above languages PLUS Russian.

His dad could speak all the above languages PLUS German.

Made me feel stupid with my 3 and a half languages compared to their 5, 6 and 7 languages LOL.

Stay safe all.

Excellent that your daughter can speak three languages.  You should tell her I'm very impressed!  Mashallah clever girl!

You are just jealous of our self deprecating universal use of language. Our use of venacular is intended to include everyone and not to exclude some according to an anachronistic concept of class superiority based on accent and pronunciation.

The English language has never been pure. It has always evolved (look at Chaucer and Shakespeare and more recently, Trollope). It will continue to evolve, it is just that the shapers of the language have changed. No longer is it true that the sun never sets on the British Empire. In any event, British English is diverse in its own right. What about the unintelligable nonsense Glaswegians or people from the North of England spout?

It makes American English sound positively erudite in comparison.

American English is a function of anti-French sentiment in the early 19th century. The idea was to anglicize the English language.

Approximately 50% of English words are derived from French so to anglicize we changed it a little:

French      American English

Centre  =  Center

Coleur   = Color

Honeur  = Honor

and so on. Of course we didn't like the brits much then either on account of their taxation without representation policies so if changing the language annoyed them, then so much for the better.

Richard, try not to get too annoyed. It's these dreadful English people.  One feels it ought to be pointed out that they can't speak their own language.

I've noticed that there are already simple filters that change things like "ex-pat" to "expatriate", and ones that look for common swear words and replace with a warning message.

I think Qatari works for The Peninsular and set-up QL as a place where they could steal stories from!
