You need to be more specific... Best in terms of what?? If you mean a car that can conquer all terrain, other than T&N, Hummer can do this and also some GMC/Chevrolet. If you mean an all rounder (good at many things, but is not necessarily the best), Jeep probably qualifies in this category. If you mean resale value - that's a tough one for me, I'm not a used-car salesmen :-)... etc.
Insurance is calculated based on insured price of the car: original price depreciated over the years. If I'm not mistaken, they always calculate 20% depreciation per year. As for maintenance, I'd owned only Kia and Honda and so far they've not been expensive: my regular service costs range in 400s only. But they were bought brand new, though, so no extraordinary maintenance was done.
