35QAR/beer is probably one of the cheaper prices - you can apply for an alcoholic permit if you company issues you a letter permitting you to buy at the one liquor outlet (and yes there are companies that don't issue them and it is illegal to have liquor on your person or in your home without one).

Check on here for an idea about housing prices - they can vary widely in price and quality.  Once you have an idea you can ask about specific areas.  With small children you would probably prefer a villa with some time of garden - again prices vary widely.  Some prefer compound living which would probably give you access to a pool and gym.

If you are arranging your own accomodation be sure to inquire about utilities (included or not) appliances (included or not) ACs (included or not) and furnishings (included or not).  If fully furnished many landlords will not allow you under any circumstances to make your own personal changes (i.e. removing the provided furniture and getting more appropriate - especially for children) and furniture to Western/European tastes is hard to find, expensive, and IMHO generally of poor quality (no IKEA).
