It's not worth the trouble upgrading to OTA versions since gingerbread eats up so much juice from the battery.

My DHD is on CyanogenMOD 7.0.3, it's heaps better than stock ROM.

There are lots of tutorials of XDA on how to downgrade the firmware of DHD & how to install Custom ROMs like CyanogenMOD.
