I got mine upgraded few days back. I just went to Settings >> About Phone >> Software Updates >> Check now
You need to be online and you get the new version downloaded and it auto upgrades. Mine got upgraded from 2.2 to 2.3
It's not worth the trouble upgrading to OTA versions since gingerbread eats up so much juice from the battery.
My DHD is on CyanogenMOD 7.0.3, it's heaps better than stock ROM.
