I don't necessarily think this is a gender issue. It depends on the personality and work characteristics of the 'boss'. Ethics and morals are very important too.
When I was an intern I had bosses who I really learned from and looked up to. I also had a few who I wouldn't take the time to spit on.
Now as a 'boss' myself, I try to make my staff happy, both in their work environment and with their renumeration package but I expect hard work (within reason!) and dedication. I realise that most have left family and homeland and I try to give them a good life here.
I try to inspire them too in their work. I wonder how they would describe me though :)
