Hey Chrissie,

Okay first relax, doha has no more creepy crawlies than any other country, and what's more they are harmless.

There are pest control companies that will come and spray your home for a nominal fee. Get your husband to do that before you arrive and you will not see a bug for almost a year I can quarantee.

The most common insects in Doha are:

Tiny black ants
Cockroaches
Carpenter ants (large black brown type usually found near villas)

Less common

Black / Red / Brown widow Spider (Which I promise you'll never come into contact with unless you live in a lumber yard and go rummaging around old planks of wood!)

Camel Spider - really ugly thing, but again never seen one myself.
Scorpion - Again not common, never met anyone who's had one in their home. Never seen one myself here. Killed one in my bedroom in Tuscany Italy though. :)

Violin back spider - This is a relative of the brown recluse. It's not as aggressive and has a painful but not highly poisonous bite as the brown recluse. The reason I mention this spider is that my home in bahrain was infested with them (i lived out in the 'countryside' in a villa. You will recognise them because they have a violin shape on their back.

If you do pest control once or twice a year, you should be fine, and if you live in an apartment then you should have no worries.

Gecko's are great little helpers and kill insects, so don't be frightened, they will not even go near you. And there is a spider called a jumping spider which you might come across here. They look ugly as sin, but they are completely harmless to you, but lethal to other spiders as that is their main source of prey. So don't kill the jumping variety if you can, they are actually you're ally.

Good luck, and trust me you will not have any problems here. I seen bigger and scarier insects elsewhere; here it's just to darn hot :)
