CREEPY CRAWLIES!!!

Chrissy
By Chrissy

My move to Doha is iminent and my husband has been there since September.  Can anybody 'give me the truth' as I am absolutely paranoid and scared s*liss of anything that crawls - especially Cockroaches....  My husband I know will lie and say there is non in sight but I really need to know before I step on that big 'bird'.

What is the situation in Doha, are pest control standards good?

Any advice is appreciated as I just want to be prepared..

Hey Chrissie,

Okay first relax, doha has no more creepy crawlies than any other country, and what's more they are harmless.

There are pest control companies that will come and spray your home for a nominal fee. Get your husband to do that before you arrive and you will not see a bug for almost a year I can quarantee.

The most common insects in Doha are:

Tiny black ants

Cockroaches

Carpenter ants (large black brown type usually found near villas)

Less common

Black / Red / Brown widow Spider (Which I promise you'll never come into contact with unless you live in a lumber yard and go rummaging around old planks of wood!)

Camel Spider - really ugly thing, but again never seen one myself.

Scorpion - Again not common, never met anyone who's had one in their home. Never seen one myself here. Killed one in my bedroom in Tuscany Italy though. :)

Violin back spider - This is a relative of the brown recluse. It's not as aggressive and has a painful but not highly poisonous bite as the brown recluse. The reason I mention this spider is that my home in bahrain was infested with them (i lived out in the 'countryside' in a villa. You will recognise them because they have a violin shape on their back.

If you do pest control once or twice a year, you should be fine, and if you live in an apartment then you should have no worries.

Gecko's are great little helpers and kill insects, so don't be frightened, they will not even go near you. And there is a spider called a jumping spider which you might come across here. They look ugly as sin, but they are completely harmless to you, but lethal to other spiders as that is their main source of prey. So don't kill the jumping variety if you can, they are actually you're ally.

Good luck, and trust me you will not have any problems here. I seen bigger and scarier insects elsewhere; here it's just to darn hot :)

I have lived in Doha for 10 months. I have never once seen a roach in the apartment that we lived in. Moved to a new house almost 2 months ago, again haven't seen a roach! I have seen them outside on the sidewalk when walking in Doha, but other then that I have not seen any.

As for living in Doha I don't think that you will have a problem with that. It is a small city though but very modern for sure. I have no problems finding anything that I need or want, well at least not for the most part.

Good luck with the move.

Which is the best Pest Control company to use and how much do they charge?

If you don't treat the manholes outside your home they will keep coming. I have a pest control company spray the manholes outside my home twice a year. A good time to do it is when the weather starts getting hot; that's when they start to invade.

Last time we did it the main manhole was blocked. Hundreds, literally, hundreds of cockroaches came out. They were all over the ground, walls, pest control guys!

They died, eventually.

hey girl ajman has changed in the last 14 years.okay let me make it a little better for you, doha can be classified in between sharjah and ajman, does that feel better.

this is a nice, peaceful place, come here, you will know.

its a bit laid back, and most of the times lazy, its not fast paced like dubai.

Ajman was awful - oh my god what am I coming to? I used to go there in the early days (14yrs) ago to the 'hole in the wall'. I thought Doha was more Western than that. I did visit Doha once but only stayed overnight.

dont kill, ask your hubby to take a broom and kick it out of the house.i feel as long as your house is clean you wont have a problem.i used to use pifpaf.

Spray. Kills them within seconds, but the house smells for weeks.

sweetheart, dont compare doha with dubai, you would be so dissapointed.

i have pest control everymonth, since i have little kids, i dont let them do all the rooms esp the halls and their bedroom where they play the whole time and have their toys thrown all over.

doha is a small place, very few highrises, its coming up.doha reminds me of Ajman in uae.but this place is changing so its good.

butterfly, i had ants coming out the bottom panel of the cabinets in my kitchen, i used to bang on to it with full vengeance till they would come out, and then kill them, what else to do??

do the ants in your house attack the food, bcos my house crawlies used to, any food would fall victim to them.they suddenly disappear one fine day.

I did wonder if you were winding me up. I suppose if I keep plugs down and sterilise the apartment once a day I hope I will be ok. Problem is I have a 7yr old who likes to run around leaving a trail of crumbs behind him. I will banish him to the Kitchen to eat .. I think.

The cockroaches you have seen in your apartment, what did you kill them with?

I was just trying to scare you! I have seen them in my flat a couple of times in two years. I have seen them in the streets when holes are digged due to roadworks (which is about everywhere these days)

I would be lying if I told you that there are no crawlies in Doha. But if your flat is brand new, you shouldn't have major issues. My flat is 5 years old or so.

Ants...Han, I have tried everything! they come somewhere from the a/c in the kitchen.

Is this down to the management company looking after the apartment building. Think I need a contact no for good pest control company at hand in case of emergency. I would pay out of my own pocket. I lived in Dubai for 5yrs and our buildings were done every 6mths and I never saw one thing in all that time. Would you describe Doha as Dubai 15yrs ago? I am trying to visualise my life there.

the place i am staying in is 20 yrs old, but no problems at all. alhamdullilah, we have regular pest control....

sorry chrissy, looks like someones having a real bad time with ants, but i still feel its got to do with the place you reside.old places will have more of the problem than brand new places.

butterfly, did u try finding the house of those ants, if you attack that, they usually diassapear.

I am getting conflicting stories here.. can anyone else advise? Is your building old. I know we are in a brad new building, so that must be good, yes?

There are big fat cockrs in Doha. I have seen them in my own flat at night, in the streets, in the parks. They are everywhere. They are big and they are FAT. And they have murderous insticts. And remember, when you see one, that means there are millions hidding.

My flat is also infested with ants and can't get rid of them!

there are pest control standards, i have been here all my life, alhamdullilah, and no complaints of cockroaches, it used to be a problem before, but not much now. most of the places are newly built, so you wont have the problem. in my current residence, masha'allah 12years, i had a problem of ants, few years ago,one day they just disappeared, never to reappear, so alhamdullilah it is good.i dont think you will spot anything crawly unless in the desert, in the past 5 years i have spotted only one lizard in my building that freaked me out, i hate them, getting shivers just thinking of it, but its nothing to be worried about. old building will have the problem of cockroaches, ants and such.

i dont know the situation of anyone who would be having a garden, there it could be problem, so someone with a garden, pls help chrissy....
