Muscat is pure Arabia. Other than what you might find in the hotels there is nothing that might hold the interest to a 5-year old, as entertainment, other than maybe the beach. Although Oman is awakening to the tourist market it has not got anywhere near catering to the 5-year old. Apart from that, for me it is the perfect destination in the Middle East with history everywhere you go, diverse geography and a people whose friendliness is second to none. It is my favourite destination of the moment ... and that has nothing to do with the fact that my 15-month old grandaughter is living there!!!!!
You can drive to Salalah from Muscat but it will take near 12 hours, although there are roadhouses where you might break the journey. I'd recommend the one-hour flight and car hire for getting around the Salalah area.
