Can anyone recommend places to go, and things to do for holiday with 5 yo ? We plan to go for 7 days to 10 days, is that too long? I never been there at all and hubby been there over 20 yrs ago, my FIL stationed in there for few years.
Hubby asked can we drive from Muscat to Salalah (sp?).
I went to Oman 3 weeks ago, for 3 days. The only thing that I can say is that it was awesome. Not only the city (Muscat) but also the people ….very friendly and kind. I think that if you are going to Muscat you will definitely need to see the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. The mosque is open for non-Muslim visitors for Saturday – Wednesday 8-11am. The women need to be covered to go in. Trust me it is worth it…… Another thing that you would enjoy is to go to the souq market. It is very traditional. Highly recommended!!!! Since you are planning to stay 7-10 days, you can always visit the mountains (we went to Wadi Bani Khalid) it was 4-5 hours drive but it was “worth it. However, if you want to go there, look for the road signs also from the other direction than the one you drive…. That is a tip! You can always go to the Oman Diving center where you can also do some snorkeling. Also visit some hotels. One which is very impressive is the Al-Bustan hotel.
Finally, you can go to NIZWA. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to go there. As I have heard though, it is a big fort inside palm trees. Don’t have second thoughts about going there…. I am really thinking of going there again….. However get a map before you go since it is easy to get lost!!!! Let me know if I can be more of help!!!!!
Appreciate your comment, my son quite happy just having holiday if we can get to hotel beach sometimes. And as for us 5 yrs here we haven't explore much the ME area apart of UAE and Jordan. So we thought we going to make an effort to do more travelling around this area before we decided packing up from Qatar.
Is the trip to Salalha worth building into our itenerary? Hubby said he remembers a place called Nizwa, about 2 hour drive from Muscat that was worth a visit, oasis type town on a Wadi.
Any reasonable (not too expensive:-) hotels you can recommend, preferably with beach?
Muscat is pure Arabia. Other than what you might find in the hotels there is nothing that might hold the interest to a 5-year old, as entertainment, other than maybe the beach. Although Oman is awakening to the tourist market it has not got anywhere near catering to the 5-year old. Apart from that, for me it is the perfect destination in the Middle East with history everywhere you go, diverse geography and a people whose friendliness is second to none. It is my favourite destination of the moment ... and that has nothing to do with the fact that my 15-month old grandaughter is living there!!!!!
You can drive to Salalah from Muscat but it will take near 12 hours, although there are roadhouses where you might break the journey. I'd recommend the one-hour flight and car hire for getting around the Salalah area.
