Sorry,

"Mubarak" as a verb means greetings, not as an adjective...

It will start either on Friday or Saturday.

By sunset today, if it is not announced that tomorrow is Ramadan, then it will surely be on Saturday.

"Mubarak" means holy as a noun. As an adjective, it means greetings.

"Kareem" means kind and noble.

As for the use of both, it goes like this:

We say "Ramadan Mubarak" to greet each other with the arrival of the holy month.

We say "Ramadan Kareem" to someone or to a guest when we meet them and cannot offer a meal or a drink because we are fasting. It is a symbol of offering hospitality, but yet practically unable to do it out of respect for Ramadan.

If Islamic month SHABAAN lasts 29 days only, then Friday 21st August 'll be the 1st day of Ramadan.

If this month lasts 30 days, then Saturday 22nd August will be the 1st day of Ramadan....

Ramadan Kareem....

Mubarak (Arabic: مبارك‎ Mubārak) is an Arabic given name, translating to "blessed one". A variant form is Barak (Arabic: بارك ‎ Bārak, not to be confused with the unrelated Hebrew name Baraq; also anglicized as Barack, most notably in the case of US president Barack Obama) Mubarak and Barak are thus the Arabic equivalent in meaning of the Latinate "Benedict" (from Latin Benedictus "blessed").

Ramadan...Each year, Muslims spend the ninth month of the Islamic calendar observing a community-wide fast. The annual fast of Ramadan is considered one of the five "pillars" of Islam. Muslims who are physically able are required to fast each day of the entire month, from sunrise to sunset. The evenings are spent enjoying family and community meals, engaging in prayer and spiritual reflection, and reading from the Qu'ran.

Ramadan is expected to begin on or around August 22, 2009 and will finish on or around September 20, 2009.

Not 22 of July

Likely to start on Saturday, but also a slim possibility of tomorrow on Friday.

I think Kareem means holy, and Mubabrack means happy?
