What should I wear to a formal event?

I will be in Doha mid November for a boat race organized by the Sheikh. My husband and I will attend a formal event. He has been told to wear a suit and tie. I have been told to dress conservatively. Please share your thoughts about what would be appropriate for a female from the US to wear to a formal event.

It might be a bit windy for a skirt...so you will always be concious of whats on display...

Its better to wear linen trousers or something similar with a smart shirt.

you can wear a formal dress but not in low cut neckline and backless, should have sleeves and long enough to cover your knees when your sitting and not a skin tight dress,,,welcome to Doha,,,

Maybe the same suit, with a light jacket and trousers or skirt, but skirt longer then your knees. There are lots of suits of light colours with you can accesorize with elegant scarf, sunglasses, belt or hat etc.

And I don't mean office type of suit which is too much simple. Or you can go for smth in "marine" theme, like whites, red and blues. Its can match the event. And shoes also depends will you stand or sit and what is the plan for event. Check the plan for event.. and enjoy it!

P.S. I always choose the skirt longer then your knees when are you sitting..))) so you will feel yourself more comfortable.
