Those do not respect Qatari culture

Straight Arrow
By Straight Arrow

These people have no respect to Qatari Culture and an example of those people are those who dress naked in the GYM or SPA.
The small baby when gets naked we understand because his mind is not yet grown completely, but those who are 20 to 40 or 50 yrs old and walk naked in the GYM dress room and shower rooms or Suana are really strange people.

Although I don't know how much it helps...

We have a saying in our tongue

"kuttan varunna pothinu vedam chollittu karyamilla"

translation : "There is no use in chanting vedas (hindu religious texts) to a buffalo that is charging at you"

This is not meant to offend Hindus in any way but it just means that a charging bull is oblivious to reason...

I would only ask that those who are vehement in their defence of modesty, that they assist others and practice it daily.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who sit on their high horses and tell other people what they should and should not do, but do nothing to help others to recognize and understand why certain social/cultural values should be recognized and respected.

Coming on Qatar Living and complaining is not finding a solution, it's complaining - educate and explain gently and in a calm manner - you'll have lots of people who are willing to at least listen and that's the first step in understanding.

I have found that this approach done in a one on one basis has more positive outcomes than a blanket complaint.

They r not alone and not on their country we have rules in Qatar they have to follow it. You must tell the police directly and they will go to Jill directly cause even though if they r in a big spa with people watching they have to where something but if the shower room or the spa for one person it's their privet time and it's up to them they can do what they want because they r a lone not with people. I hope u understand my thought.

"you are dealing with people from far more advanced cultures on this one.

Go learn something and then return."

it is a very sad thing to know from you sir, that being far more advance culture is to behave like what you said.

so another thing your culture seems moving and now in the advance position.WOW...

and the arab muslim culture stay behind.

modesty and chastity is not known from the western and european dictionary, as well as with these people who hate anything islamic. but care to visit and live in the land where islamic law is implemented.

anyway to all of you guys, keep going, keep complaining about islamic and muslims, the way tiger whining and complaining is the same with you complaining against qatar and islam and muslims.

ungodly people wants all to do unchastity, make fornication unavoidable, adultery at hand reach. they want to see nakedness in all corners of the world. they want it to be a normal scenery, like in france, there is nude island, in america, there are beaches where you can see all in a seducting bikini, even topless sometimes. you want it here in qatar huh guys? arent you? your lobbying will work keep it up...let say after 100 years ...no it is happening right here... go to any private village where the residents are westerner and european.

but you guys are crazy because you dont like them isnt it. you are used up with those. no challenge at all. you want someone else, right? those women who wear black is more challenging than those open. so that is why you are so eager and in result you criticize them back in front, up and down...you're funny guys. you cant. and you will fail most of the time to let these women dress in bikinis right in your eyes, hahahahaha....

i really admire the effect of islamic teaching in qatar, specially in the society of qataris. not like in the outside world where everything is free. so the effect, lots of single parent, bastard children and promiscuos men.rape in open ground, molestation, homosexuality, perversion, and more.surplus women, aids victim and more.

and those people who experienced that problem of society wants this nation (qatar)to be like them, how silly, isnt it. and look they are trying all they can. even calling them with unadvance culture as MMYKE said.

so MMYKE if your bases of advance culture is to make normal and ok all forms of nudity, nakedness, drunkeness in the public then i must say your culture is not advance. you are still in ignorance...still backward... in arabic JAHILIYAH...jahilun....

that there are differences between West and East but this does not mean that East must hate the West.

Any wise guy will refuse to bring something bad at his home.

The public places are every ones home, so it must be respected.

I do not know how you think Boston but I am sure that a wise man who is married would like to bring or prostitue at his home.

The point which I want to say if some one wants to do some thing bad here in Qatar, should not do it at all.

Also by being open to the west this does not mean to bring the bad things.

I wrote this because some people here in QL want to import the bad things to Qatar, and they justify this by saying this the tax of being open.

I really don't think that this act has disrespected the Qatari culture. As far as I know, this is what's happening in a Spa room as it is limited to more privacy than a swimming pool. I think, if any of you think that there is something that disrespecting the culture, it should be brought to that particular management and sort it out. For example, may be he can go and complain to the owner of the Spa or simply change your Spa and go to another. What we should understand is, true this is Qatar, and we should respect Qatari culture, and at the same time, this has already begun a multi-cultural country and majority are expats. That does not mean that expats can act the way they want, but I believe they should be respected at least a bit for who they are. Or else, then expats should be totally banned from Qatar and not allow them to come and live and work in Qatar. Hence, I think matters like this should be considered in more matured and adult way!

Hi Khalid,

I agree with you - what you see growing up around you constitutes as normal for you. And that is exactly what a lot of people are trying to say here, even though they aren't so clear or thoughtful in putting their point across. I grew up in the Middle Eastern, European, and American cultures - and to be honest you're always growing up, even in your 20's and 30's. Everything I have seen growing up in different parts of the world taught me that the term "normal" is extremely relative. What is normal to you, may be absolutely abnormal to me even if my or your religion explicitly states it. It all depends on your environment, which shapes your thinking and your attitude towards others. Yes, people should definitely be considerate about the culture of the country they live in (when in Rome, do as the Romans). However, you must also keep in mind that by welcoming expats in your country, you are consciously allowing some breathing space for alternate behavior. As far as gym changing rooms, spas, and saunas are concerned, you are forgetting that these very luxuries are ALSO IMPORTED. They are not an inherent part of Arab, Middle Eastern, or South Asian culture (which mostly makes up the population of Qatar). You are being unfair in expecting people who in fact began this trend to modify it for your needs. Let's be honest to ourselves, when we want to see nudity, everyone knows where to go or what to do and the first place that pops in your head is not a gym locker room or spa. Lastly, out of SHEER PRACTICALITY, gyms, spas and saunas are meant to allow your body to breathe and relax, not sweat and stink under thick layers.

Hope I managed to lessen some of the expat hatred?

Here in Qatar we do not hate other people who has different beliefs but we hate those who want to impose on us their beliefs which may contradict with Islam.

What is the definition of a Muslim?

One of the definitions of a Mulslim

Muslim is a person who does not hurt others by any mean.

Talk about double standards. Why on earth would we respect you or your religion when you pretend to be a stable, loving, faithful Muslim following the word of the Quran yet all the while you are harbouring a desire for an extra-marital affair? acceptable to disrespect others and I certainly would suggest that anyone who hates Arabs should not even consider working here as only bad things will come of it.

I have to say, I also don't understand why an Arab Muslim would put on his profile that he is: "in urgent need of A bitch. perferably a blonde caucasion 5 foot ten blue eyes 50 to 55 kilos and no older than 25. No kids."

I find that really insulting -- especially as a caucasian woman. You are promoting the stereotype that Western women are easy and sexual playthings for men. You just lost all credibility in my view.

I feel the same way about your brother nasser who lists his interests as: money women and alcohol.

How can you guys demand respect when you don't have it for yourself or others?

It is a cultural difference. Many people think that people using saunas and changing rooms that are segregated according to sex shouldn't be so worried about if someone else exposes themselves a bit in the course of showering, changing or using a sauna. Personally, I am very modest by nature, but I also don't go around looking to see if I can see another woman in a state of undress. And if I did happen to see that, I wouldn't be offended because I would just figure she doesn't share my culture.

I think Khalid started this once again to pit Arab Muslims against Westerners and non-Muslims. He has a long history of drawing up these comparisons that always are aimed at judging one wrong and the other right. That is why I responded in the way that I did. I think Khalid promotes a lot of irritation and disrespect here on QL.

And lastly, I agree that I am very grateful I am in a safe place. However, I am referring to overall safety as a person -- not because I am an American. I have never been any place where I was treated poorly or afraid for my safety because I am an American -- and I have been all over the Middle East, Asia, Latin America and Europe.

do you harbour internaldoubts about your sexuality?? does it bother you that others might have dispositions and thoughts different, or in line with yours??

Why does liberty bother you so much? are you a homosexual and just cannot express it??

why do you even begin to think that nudity has anything remotely to do with sex? besides the fact that you people are never allowed to show any skin.

Doe sit make you think at all why you have the only culture on the planet like this??

Do you realize that others do not condemn your culture, yet you condemn everyone elses??

First in line for membership... mmyke, harmagedon, PM, exiledsaint, titan_uranus etc...

why restrict the nudity to changing rooms... we'll have nudity even in the excercise areas...

they can be nude on the tread mills, while cycling, nude during aerobics, yoga and even while they do weights...

This way, those who can't bear the nudity can keep away and the nudists can strut their stuff to their hearts content

and when the cops come around to deportation, they can just take the membership roster and it would be a favor for QL as well...

I've heard this argument of how there is only either one of the sexes in a gym locker room so nudity is okay...

Does that mean that when we go to men's toilets at the malls, its okay to be nude?

Or maybe even at barber shops... why have separate changing rooms for males... just have one big room where everyone can just strip at will... its a lot more economical right...

Lame westerners with no sense of shame who drop their pants the first excuse they get and then charge others who wince upon being exposed to a third person's privates!

If you have the common sense to understand that we find the sight of your privates utterly disgusting... please oblige... if you don't then well... I guess a dog's tail can never be straightened...

Adam & Eve was created naked, so whats the fuss and the religious problems about that. Its a matter of choice, though morally wrong unless done in an extreme way. Just how do you change your cloth in a changing room without taking off all your clothes in the first place. Even the Gods in heaven takes his underwear off to piss.

By Harmagedōn• 28 Nov 2009 20:32
Harmagedōn

So a changing room is considered a public place in the Quran.

Maybe you the interpretation of the referrals has been overdrawn a bit. Equally, at times of Quran there were no sports-clubs, health clubs and such (maybe bath-houses) thus it is one of these points where Quran is holding you in a position where flexibility and adaptation to current times are extremely difficult. Your deserts are changing into cities, this has consequences. CHANGE is one of them, change does not means you have to loose your faith or set aside core values, however whining over seeing a penis Tis just simply immature.

You have touched a point where I think people like you should grow up and get over 'it'.

You have a penis,

I have a penis,

You are a man, you have an ass

I am man, i have an ass

We cant help God/Allah/Jaweh has created us as such.

It is natural.

Unless you have doubts about your own sexuality and may be scared of getting a stiffy when seeing another man his penis. That, is your problem.

Why can we Europeans sit naked, mixed males and females, in a Sauna/Steam Room without any problems? I understand that here mixed is simply not possible, however a male that raises hell over seeing a penis in a changing room.........

Very very sad and immature.

In most GYMs in Qatar when you go to the locker room after a shower, some times there is a guy standing infront of the locker naked, but at the same time I saw few days back and many days back some western people changing their dress in a very proper way and not being naked.

My message is to those who do not change in a proper way what is the problem if you do it in a proper way?

SO there was this prof who was like a genius and a real pain for one of the classes he had to take and my friend was literally traumatised when he saw the dude in his gym locker stark naked! And for a few days after that day whenever he went for that prof's lecture all he could think was of the scene in the gym:)

Nothing is wrong with you having your own believes, what is wrong is you imposing them on others and expect the world to spin around you. This is no longer possible, not even in one’s own country!

As for the fact that your country opened its doors to the west, it just has to bear the good and the bad.

The fact that you can type your message in a computer here in Qatar is the result of letting the western world come into Qatar. If the West wasn't here, you would be in the same conditions as you were 100 years ago. And maybe that would be better, because you wouldn't have to face any western or western products or life style.

Because your government choose not to remain isolated and invited the west in, you have to take it the whole package.

If you are not happy with this, which is your right, please convey your message to your Emir - the only one who can stop the western world coming into Qatar.

I feel sorry for people like you, because this is the global world and you can't expect the world to pretend they are what they are not, just for you.

Khalid, you clearly have issues. Just admit your sexuality...stop denying it.

As it happens and Im sure some will agree with me here, I speak/work with/teach many young Qataris and they all love the West. They cant wait to leave Qatar in the summer so they can walk around, free from idiots like Khalid.

They can TALK to girls/boys have a laugh, and just be themselves. No pressure, no expectations, no hassle.

The fact of the matter is, the youth of Qatar are waking up to the fact that there is more to life than Qatar and SOME of the idiots who live here. I say some because I actually think the majority of Qataris are good people and I have some good Qatari friends.

Cant escape the fact that some will just never escape their own, very outdated and very unfortunate belief that the West is 'evil' and that we are trying to corrupt the youth of Qatar.

If these people hate the West so much, why get fat on Mcdonalds or KFC? Why watch Hollywood movies? Why support Premiership football teams?

So, in summary...Khalid is a very, very strange individual.

i don't find changing in a locker room offending, in fact six sense spa at sharq village doesn't contain changing rooms. However, i do find getting nude in a sauna or steam room to be revolting.

Sorry, but can't help wondering why Khalid is fixated on naked people of the same sex. In such situations, you get dressed, you go home. Why is he hanging around in all male locker rooms and suggesting that young people are "peeping" at others?

I know for a fact no one is NAKED in the gym and even if you ran into it in a steam room (where I know it is discouraged here), men are not with women.

You need to get control of yourself and stop sexualizing everyone. I suggest praying more and fasting since you can't seem to control your gaze.

"since we have now established that being naked is normal in changing rooms and saunas"....

DREAM ON!!

Quote... Experts say that sitting is not the best position because to get maximum benefits requires that you lie down. Even when sitting these same experts advice that you should not let your feet dangle. So, proper sauna etiquette requires that you, at least, wear a bathing suit or wrap a towel around your body. And, you need to choose the right material for both the bathing suit as well as the towel to get maximum benefits. Using breathable cotton is recommended as it will prevent the occurrence of discomforting moments in the sauna that will occur simply because you failed to address the clothing issue properly. unquote

To a certain extent... I mean it is a shower room and we are all men, right!!! Some of us are more blessed than others, but for the most part we should be able to be comfortable around each other. My issue is when the naked guy wants to come up and begin a conversation!!! I mean come on man! I talk loud enough, I don't need a microphone in my face. Respect the boundary rule. Being naked in a shower room is cool, but conversations will be nullified if you are not securely covered.

Knowing the culture is necessary to show respect.

Next time I will put a nice post on Qatari Culture, because really what makes me sad are those people who think all Qatari people are not nice because they faced one bad guy and I am also 100 % sure that there are western people who understand that not all Qataris are not nice.

The mistake some people do is that they judge the who population by one person.

By ummjake• 18 Nov 2009 14:53

You seriously know people who would like to require western women to wear it here?

How about starting with the local chicks first? See how they respond to that new dress code...

Muslim women are not even ALLOWED to wear it in the Grand Mosque in Mecca during Hajj, during the holiest of holy times; that should be a clue as to how much of a requirement it is.

As to not getting naked in public, both sides need to suck it up a little bit.

Locals that are offended: You're in a gym. People sweat and get naked in the changing rooms. Nobody is stripping inches away from your face, so just turn away or leave if it bothers you THAT much.

Expats who get naked: Understand that folks here are more uptight about the naked human body that you are, and cut them some slack. Go into the changing room to strip.

Saunas? If it bothers you to see naked bodies in a sauna, you shouldn't go there. If you don't like to get naked yourself, then fine, wear your undies or a swimsuit. But your body is meant to be naked in a sauna.

It is not necessary to follow what we do here in Qatar exactly.

We should have a common respect between us where we understand each other, and I strongly support the statement which says there are many common things between Islam way of life and Christianity.

... such as comments like 'we do not respect Qatari culture'...!!! If you want YOUR culture to be respected in the way YOU perceive respect, then why have things/activities which are not according to your culture? Look at London, ONE of the places in the world with such a HUGE mix of cultures. Does anybody english complain on the forum about habits of non-english cultures? I think that in this country people need to open up their minds and adapt to evolution. It is no wonder things are so far behind here. You want to be like other countries? Develop customer service, construction safety and standards, househelp and babysitter conditions, legal working hours, salaries, driving, arrogance and ignorance... and I could go on forever!!

I went into the police station today to pay a traffic fine and instead of answering to my 'Good morning, where can I pay this fine?' I got laughed at and they walked away!!! I was dressed in long trousers and a T-Shirt with half sleeves!!! And when I paid the fine I was asked: 'you like Qatar, Qatar beautiful yes? Qatar perfect?'.... yeah sure, soooo NOT!!!! If it wasn't for work nobody would catch me in this country, and once I leave the Middle East I swear to God you won't find me here again even if my LIFE depended on it!

I am not saying that there are only small-minded local people in this country - I met a lot of very pleasant and educated people with whom it has been a pleasure to talk and socialize. I have actually met more ignorant and self-centered expats than anywhere else in the World I have been! Those who think they can talk on the phone whilst driving and take their kids with them when it's time to pay the fine... and end up with the minimum to pay. Or drive through red lights and say that it wasn't their fault! So these people adapt and fit in perfectly with the non-constant standards I keep coming across...

Anyway... put a towel around your waist to keep Khalid happy ;) and have a nice day everybody!

From what I see from the comments. They dont have a proper arrangement for changing cloths in the gym here.

Only a locker and that doesnt hide you when you change. So the gym and the culture keepers has no right to complain here.

Create individual closed arrangement for changing, you will save your eyes from viewing hanging things. ;)

Khalid... what these people try to do to you is known as 'Argumentum Ad hominem'...

Its subverting the message by attacking the messenger

Its an old trick used by politicians

So you have to be careful to keep the topic separate from your personal beliefs on other issues...

for instance... observe how chinx makes a comment that I may not be taking showers after my work out... its a baseless allegation and it has nothing to do with being naked in the locker rooms... she does it bcos she realizes that her argument is hollow and her only hope is to slander me and hope that I take bait and switch the discussion to defending myself... juvenile... but sometimes effective...

An ad hominem argument, also known as argumentum ad hominem (Latin: "argument to the person" or "argument against the person") is an argument which links the validity of a premise to an irrelevant characteristic or belief of the person advocating the premise.

A weak person will be corrupted.

In the west they are free to do what they want.

Here they should rspect the local customs.

If I was going to a GYM in the west and then I want to take a shower with my pants for example and it is not allowed with pants, I will take the shower at my home.

Here we are not used to see these naked people, and believe many Qatari people that these naked people infront of the locker are donkeys, because we are not used.

do not know how change their dress by that I mean that if they change dress they must show all their parts.

I have a question and let us answer it honestly, does any one of you like his / her 5 yrs old child to see a naked man or woman in the locker room?

Again it is culture issue.

For example why many families in west let their 13 or 15 yrs old girl or boy go away and come back after some time?

At 13 or 15 yrs he/she might get killed or what ever like dealing with drugs or becoming prostitue, really 13 or 15 yrs is the time where the good values are earned, but it seems that those families (not all families becaue I know there are good west families) do not have any responsiblity towards their children.

Really raising children is something very difficult and chalangable.

If your kid is raised properly then you are helping your country development, but if your kid becomes a drug dealer and mafia then you help in destroying your community.

She exclaimed: “Ah!”..

I looked around, and didn’t find anything exciting. Besides the lockers, I was the only object in the room. I asked her: "What made you so excited habibti?"

She goes like: “you… (ME??) .. .you … you cannot change here”.

EH? Ain’t I in the LOCKERS/changing area? Where should I change then? Home?

In west for example there are what is called nudity parks and I think it was brought on national geography or discovery channel.

Here are two types of people the first type is changing his dress naked infront of the locker, the second type will change properly with out being naked.

I forgot there is also a third type who is changing his / her dress naked infront of the locker and want others to do the same. !!

See it is about respect.

Let us vote those who support changing naked infront of the locker type 2 and those who support changing properly infront of the locker with out being naked type 1

Sheikh Khalid, as your lawyer I see your point, but perhaps we need to step back and clarify a few things here:

1. Do you mean Spa or Swimming Pool? Spa is more privacy with limited people can gathered...half naked is normal but totally naked in front so many people event with the same gender is insane..perhaps they all homo

2. When you open a public Spa in Qatar you need to get a permit from local authority. They should know what is the Spa for and what is the implication of this Spa before they issue a permit. If they feel it will offend Qatari culture they will not issue a permit or will not allow Qatari to go inside..am I right?

3. If you feel offended by the guys please remind him politely to follow the unwritten rules, if he/she still ignore it please report to Spa Manager and file your complaint. Spa Manager should not which clothes allowed or not..

3. If the Spa does not do anything then take your camera with you and shoot those who you think not appropriately dressed and report it with picture to CID. This is your country my friend none expatriate can direct you on this...why you complaint in QL..wrong place...

Good luck my friend..sometime you have to be stringent to the ignorant and arrogant expatriates...some of them want to spoil your culture with their weird behavior and dress...PROTECT YOUR CHILDREN MORAL TODAY...!!!

Go and learn history

The people who ruled Spain & morocco were in fact originated from the arab peninsula. We can argue though that they were mixed of moors & arabs

And when I said eastern culture it’s not limited to the Arab peninsula

You can keep your prejudice for your self

BTW, just that you know SPAs in major hotels in Malaysia for instance has advisory signs to be modest & respect the Islamic culture .

I don't get your point still...

I don't see what cooling down or going to the sauna has anything to do with covering your private parts

Just wear a towel for God's sake!!

If you think this is a reflection of our culture, you are damn right it is... it is not local culture to be stark naked in front of strangers... same sex or not... just as it is not culture in the West for the same sex to be holding hands unless you are homosexual

I don't see why anyone has to be ashamed of subtle variations of local culture...

Just cos you are from the West does not mean that cultural practices slightly different from yours are regressive as you seem to imply... If you find these cultural differences difficult to swallow, fly back, but don't consider it acceptable to stick around and then ignore local rules and customs all together... maybe someone else from wherever you are from who are more tolerant of cultures different from their own can take your place...

you are wrong.

If one has a hard workout, and then has a hot sauna, you cool down. No-one walks about waving their private parts for wierd reasons, unless one is wierd, and they are usually shunned or boooted out of the change room.

However, arab countries have absolutely no culture or history of working out, or using the sauna, and then make the leap that this is somehow sexual. Its insane, and a reflection of your culture.

Please, just go away, and let those who come here to work, and who have raised this place from the sand, to have a moment of peace and relaxation without being bombarded once again with your silly rules.

After a relaxing time at the gym, and re-uniting ourselves with our innermost thoughts, we still have to drive home amongst the Land Cruisers....thats plenty enough.

But still I've seen people who insist on walking around stark naked!

People can rant all they want but the fact is that this is not acceptable behavior in many parts of the world, especially these parts...

Let me give small example

Qatar is an Islamic country and if you have respect to Qatar then you should respect its culture.

Many people do not know about this, so it is chance for them to know.

If some one is borne in a place where nudity is always around him he will grow up thinking nudity is normal.

That is the end of the story, people are borne with clean and pure heart and this heart later on will either be good or bad.

It is some people physcology to get affected by the surrounding.

You are the one who choose to teach your son what is good or what is bad or teach him both, so he/she will do the right thing and stay away from the bad thing.

WTH / WTF

Is there any "law/decree" which states that people is not allowed naked in the showers/batrooms/dressrooms/saunas in gyms, spas or even in hotels?? How is this affecting the Qatari Culture??

You have not answered any of the questions that have raised in the discussion!!

Once again raise this issue to the Management of the Gym. Ask for rules to be enforced (do they have rules?)...but remember once you call for rules everybody will have to abide by them, even you...so be prepared to be pointed/mentioned by somebody else when you are not attending them.

maybe you should raise this to the "GYM" management/administration.

Are there rules to use the facilities? are they visible to everyone? are they explicit in terms of dressing in or out of the showers, sauna or bathrooms? Do those rules need enforcement from the management/personnel in the Gym?

On the other hand if it's in the "showers" how come it is disrecpectful of the Qatari Culture. Except for those in there no body else is looking at that.

I mean no one of those you mention in their 20, 40 or 50's is going half naked or totally naked into the streets (or are they??). And if they do then it will become an issue.
