Qataris should be banned from entering Cinema

MBP
By MBP

I am a Qatari and I hate to say this BUT enough is enough!! Qataris should be banned from entering cinemas or should go to their own! YES I am generalizing, including me! - talk about Qatarization - Qatarize the darn Movie theaters too!
I have never enjoyed a single movie here in Doha since I can remember! What the eff are some of us thinking? like they own the theaters?

Why is it always a bunch of bedouin, uneducated MATURE QATARIS have to ruin it for me EVERY TIME!! No matter how much I change my seat, I always find someone who kick the hell out of my seat and rock the entire row!

And only when I start to focus, I hear a ringtone and the @#$%#$ answers and speaks out loud! I shush him, he keeps on phone, I asked civilly to turn it off or at least keep it quite (WHAT ARE YOU A FRIGGIN’ DOCTOR???) Why do I have to suffer!!

I change my seat again, here I sit beside this quite one who doesn’t talk with his friends nor on the phone but he only texts! Awww how sweet! I can handle that but it comes to a point where the phone backlight is so distracting and can’t focus anymore! Let’s don’t forget the movie commentators and the out-loud laughers, who force themselves to laugh so some other idiots in the first rows hear them and laugh back and here the laugh conversation and whistling begin..

I step out, ask the asian guy outside if he can do anything! Of course he cannot and I understand “it is THEIR COUNTRY THEIR CINEMA THEIR MALL”. So I go to the management office, demand a refund and get outta there!

My friends recommend to download the movies off the internet and spare myself the torture, the thing is some pictures MUST be seen on big screens! Why the hell we should be thinking of alternatives for this? It’s just pathetic! They should teach a Theater Etiquette class at schools, seriously!

I tried other movie theaters like Royal Plaza’s. Has anybody been there? Don’t bother! Oh the noise from some machine it’s like a helicopter hovering above and the decor is just so 80s, they meant it to be that way, they think its glamorous! ;/
It’s summer, the freaks will conquer the malls, so I don’t see any hope. It’s a cultural thing it’s family it’s education..

God help us.. hmph ;x

P.S This post is not meant to offend anybody!

amoud - I saw the the original post, and the fact that someone would generalize their own nationality like that says more than I have to about them. Would you like a cookie? You seem angry.

andrew - Help themselves from what? From not commenting on others ignorance and stupidity?

janeyjaney - Yes their mentality is very similar to Hitler's. When you blindly hate people of a certain race/ethnicity and blame them with everything wrong in society that is not very different from what Hitler did to the Jews of Germany. Maybe it's just me and what Hitler wrote was actually constructive criticism, right?

Generally I am usually sad that I don't speak too much Arabic, but when I'm in the cinema I am grateful that I only have rudimentary language skills.

I could think of nothing worse than being able to understand all that muttering and name calling that goes on and on in the cinema. At least when it's another language you can sort of block it out.

In my experience, the worst offenders haven't been the boys, but the girls, who sit up the back in the family area and just talk, at full volume, all the way through the movie.

I go to the cinema with Qatari friends who sit in silence and dutifully switch their mobile to silent and behave, so I know that they aren't all that uncivilised, but you do have to wonder why some people behave this way in a cinema.

It's either arrogance (they believe that they don't have to be polite and shut up)

or

It's ignorance (they believe that they actually aren't annoying and no one really minds).

Either way it really ruins the movie for the rest of us.

I know there is some technology out there to jam or block wireless communications.

I think, if the cinema theaters can implement this inside the movie theaters, usage of cell phones gradually diminish.

of course it is not only qataris, but if you go to a movie in canada most people respect others.

i don't know who else is doing it, but many qataris are pretty annoying in the cinema - although in my experience it's usually the younger ones. i guess teenagers are the same all over.

they have announcements to turn off mobiles before every movie and that doesn't do a damn thing.

But I don't think the problem to be so acute as to resort to banning a particular nationality from entering cinemas here. The solution is simple - everyone needs to be made aware of the rules and regulations while in a cinema - a simple set of do's and don'ts and the management needs to enforce it gradually. I'am sure Qataris are great hosts and they are sensitive to the feelings of expatriates in their country. After all it reflects poor on their image too.

Just my two cents.

I don't blame Qatari's in the cinema...it's wrong to single out a single race. It's people in general who are ruining movies, the Dukhan cinema is the same and I think you will find few Qatari's there.

I personally blame the cinema management for allowing this to happen.

If they really gave a damn they would do the following

1)before each movie show a short "please show respect to others in the cinema" clip, highlighting expectations.

2)station ushers in the cinema to look out for and remove persistantly disruptive people.

If anything cinemas must be loosing money due to people not attending due to the behaviour found inside.

In Kuwaiti cinemas it's all cell phones - pepole phoning their freinds to tell them they are in the cinema!!! They also all take laser pointer and cover the screen with red dots.

...and yet in Bahrain, they are sooooo civilized in the cinema.

Step one: Don't brush teeth that day and eat item heavily laced with garlic and onion. Breathe freely and heavily.

Step Two: Look at neighbors and smile often. (Jaws style)

Step three: Before the previews begin start whispering in a high voice while rocking back and forth in seat. (Make sure to make heavy eye contact periodically and don't forget to smile and breathe heavily.

Step Four: Bring stuffed animal or barbie doll and hold up in front of self and scold. Make sure to twist head of doll, make frequent eye contact with difficult neighbors...

Step Five: Once movie begins if noise and rudeness continues begin to whimper in whiney voice. Stare at offending cell phone or person while rocking faster and biting head of doll. Sure to have clear area for the rest of the picture.

Seems like you comment on everything I say – can’t keep your fingers away from the keyboard?

Where have I said I hated Qatari’s? Where have I said you’re not entitled to an opinion? Funny you say this as you’re the one who has hissy fits anytime anyone says anything negative about Qatar. You say that you can’t stand people living in Qatar being racist towards Qataris.....LOOK AROUND YOU AMNESIA, ARE YOU REALLY THAT BLIND. Or am I missing something?

It comes across that anytime anything negative is said about Qatar, you accuse people of being hateful, racist, or ignorant. You need to realize that everyone IS entitled to their opinion and this is a forum where people like to express their thoughts, vent and yes sometimes talk about the locals. IT doesn’t mean they are racist or hateful. I think it’s you who needs to realise that everyone is entitled to an opinion as your always the one accusing people of generalizing and have even asked mods to step in as you couldn’t handle the trash talk.

Sometimes Amnesia I think we are all living in a different Qatar to you.

The reality is that things suck for the majority of people here so a discussion is healthy - I mean do you really want to see positive changes in Qatar or what?

@Renee, it must be so hard for you trying to keep your fingers away from the keyboard and feeling you have to comment on everything I say.

"In one of your posts you referred to an “Indian” security guy? Why did you have to say he is “Indian”?"

If I mention race it's to indentify the fact that it's not a race thing when someone is an 'as shole'. It's an as shole thing. You know what I'm talking about.

"Your living in a country where race mean’s everything, so why do you think people blame race?"

1) Means nothing to me.

2) You should be better than everyone else.

I don't need to know where you're from to know that you argue for the sake of arguing.

We get it, you hate Qatar, you hate Qataris, we're all the same and none of us are entitled to an opinion. HAPPY?

Do crazy people know they are crazy? Loud movie-goers don't know they are annoying? Does this line of reasoning apply to the nationals in general? An interesting thread that did walk this way a few months ago did OK (balanced between the likes of Britexpat, Tweetybird, Gumby, DiamondGirl, Owen, Brandylady).

Like Bastook, I go to the cinema in the early afternoon before the nuts come. But only ONE movie was worthy enough to see in the cinema: Mission Impossible 3. I saw that on a Tues 1:30 show. The cinema was empty except for quiet couple sitting in the back.

Other than that, I download movies from torrents online.

By Renee• 28 Jul 2008 04:35

It must be so hard being you having to justify every negative comment on here.

There are so many here that want to blame race. Get it in to your head. EVERYONE IS THEIR OWN PERSON.

In one of your posts you referred to an “Indian” security guy? Why did you have to say he is “Indian”?

Your living in a country where race mean’s everything, so why do you think people blame race?

Until everyone is considered equal and people stop looking down at other races in Qatar expect people to blame race.

By amnesia• 26 Jul 2008 09:55

@formatted soul,

No MBP didn't claim that. It was MY comment. Just as I can say "hmm the sky isn't very blue today" without the sky claiming to be blue.

Does it freaking make sense for a national to say that Qatari's IN QATAR should be banned from their OWN cinemas? Is that an intelligent solution?

How about saying "Idiots who disrupt other's entertainment be banned." Isn't that a better statement?

@renee, What is it with me? I am free to post what I feel just as YOU feel you are free to post garbage and shi t stir.

You say 90% of Qatari's act like that. GIVE ME FREAKING EVIDENCE. I was in the cinema two days ago and there were TWO Qatari's acting like idiots. In that case ANOTHER Qatari said "you keep talking and I'll smash your face in". The rest of the cinema was silent.

By my count that's around 1-2%

Now if YOU want to compare, what the hell does driving skills have to do with cinema?

I'm not desperate at ALL to make people think of Qatari's. I'm desperate to show everyone that it's unbelievable that there are those in Qatar who are racist towards Qataris.

Stop generalizing, stop being racist, stop thinking that Qatari's are all in the same boat because we're not. We all act different and we're not in a club.

I've seen as shole Qatari's that I've argued with. OMG! A Qatari angry with a Qatari? I've never seen a national get angry at his own national.

Why do I always need to have footers on my posts to satisfy people like my sweet Renee?

Now I shall explain because the fire inside you covers the truth.

My post implied that it would be more intelligent to get rid of ALL people who do not act courteously. (We don't need to look at skin color, sex, or race). I gave an example to indicate that as much as people want to think that only Qatari's act nicely in the cinema there are other countries too.

There are so many here that want to blame race. Get it in to your head. EVERYONE IS THEIR OWN PERSON.

I think in cinemas they should implement what the airlines do before a flight. Have two attendants instructing how to behave in the cinemas and if they dont, they can point them to the nearest exit..Also instead of having breathing masks they can have gagging masks to shut the people up who still talk during the movie..so glad i dont go to the movies anymore, if its this bad...

Amnesia what is with you constantly comparing? Let's compare then.

The fact of the matter is that you might get say two Brits maybe three Germans carrying on at the movies BUT then you will get say 30 Qataris’ in the same day carrying on and much worse. You can’t compare the two and doing so only show’s how desperate you are that people think only good of Qatari’s. There are many useless people in my home country and I am the first to admit it - it's important to openly discuss these matters so that progression can start.

Two British men got into a fight...wow....90% of Qataris drive to kill and the majority of Qatari’s act like twats in the movies...But hear that everyone, two British men got into a fight. Oh but now I'm...what was it....generalising...

Ok MBP I'll give you some lessons. First you have to look the part. Make sure you wear some really baggy jeans, a shirt 20 sizes too big, and some corn rows like your in a rap video or some wanna be in the City Center. Don't forget the dew rag preferably red or blue. Secondly you have to develop what we call back home the ICE GRILL. This is a look that lets him know that you're a stone faced killer. If you can't fight, then make sure you pretend to rush him and have some of your boys grab you and start shoutin "Let me go! You're lucky my friends are holdin me back." As you yell make sure you flail your arms as wildly as you can. Try not to hit your friends or they might let you go and you'll be exposed for the fraud you really are. Lastly, you need a few tough lines to intimidate him (see Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp fiction when he shook down Brent. Classic scene). If all of that fails, tell him your uncle is a big shaikh and he'll have you thrown in jail.

SO go forth young man / woman and enjoy your movie experience. May the force be with you.

Hi Scarlett, how are things in TX?

Me too, the rare times I go to the movies here are in the early afternoons when hardly anyone's there.

Do like the assigned seats too, have kind of gotten used to them. A couple of summers ago, took my kids to the movies in Calif, I think it was the Pirates of the Carib movie, and it was the first or second day. Well, we got there about 10 minutes before it started. I had completely forgotten that it would be a madhouse. Which it was. Couldn't find 3 seats together, got stuck sitting way up front, so we just went back out and exchanged our tickets for a later show, No Problem.

I'm not sure they would do that here?

Count me in for the afternoon movie group! :-)

yep...seems there are good things in all countries...now if we could just put all those good things together and implement them in ALL theatres, just think how wonderful watching movies would be!

Tell you what...we need to start an Early Afternoon Movie Group on QL. At least we might be able to watch movies in peace!!

Ohh the mention of refunds reminded me..was in a theater in North Carolina and the fire alarm went off..so everyone evacuated..we all stood outside for 15 minutes, then went back to resume the movie...on the way in, we received coupons for another free movie and free candy!! Some folks just know how to run a business and get repeat customers!! Ohh and the alarm went off due to the popcorn machine overheating and causing a bit of smoke.., so no fire!!

Grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked, the good fortune to run into the ones I do,and the eyesight to tell the difference.

Tell me about it, Scarlett!! I was in England last month, we were at the movies watching QUIETLY a movie - DUH!- when some gangsta wannabe teenagers entered and start screaming and making some minor damages so some of the audience left and obviously reported it to the management.I stayed. It only took the police 5 min to intervene, they asked a cpl of qs, the management apologized and they both left.. I had to watch the rest of the movie AND here's the best part WE GOT REFUNDED! I mean the chaos lasted for only 2 mins before the kids ran away through the exit doors! I was watching the movie during all this - being Qatari so I am used to such incidents- How cool was that? :D

thank you!! reading your thread made me laugh. The ONLY time I go to the movies in the evenings in Doha is with the Movie group, and the reason is I like the people in that group! I usually go to the earliest showing in the afternoon just so I don't have to deal with the issues you posted!

I love the fact there are assigned seats!! In the States, its just random seating and it can be quite a chore to get enough seats for even just two people together..especially when you have inconsiderate folks that won't move over a seat...so, trust me, its not just Qataris that can be that way!

Do have to say tho, in the States, if someone is on their phone, talking, kids being rambuctious, texting, whatever is annoying another customer...the management WILL haul their azz out the door immediately, with no refund. Wish they'd do that in Doha! One night I was out watching movie and felt like I had one of those massage chairs at the pedicure stations...the ADULT behind me was kicking and moving my seat so much I wanted to just haul off and knock him silly...saying something to him was useless because he just stared back like he didn't understand a word I said..but he did because I heard him speak English to his partner...oh well...there's some jerks in all nationalities!!

Grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked, the good fortune to run into the ones I do,and the eyesight to tell the difference.

Thank you all for your comments and sorry for replying late, just got home from work..

PhilyEagles07 Puhleaaaaaaaaaaase teach me how to threaten!

Kellyhorses, hmmmmmm how to prove such a thing online! let's iChat and ill show you my Qatari ID ;p

Eco-Savvy, thanks for the article.. It should be printed in arabic and posted all over the place really.

problem is those inconsiderate people they neither read the "switch off your cell phone" signs nor read Qatarliving.com because they don't speak English. So I am thinking of starting an arabic language blog so I can spread the word and hopefully they will learn something! Actually I have been thinking of that regardless those incidents, it's just about time..

that a qatari commented an issue like this...sadly.., it's not only qatari's are like that...it only happened that your countrymen are here to stay and we expats came here which is the reason we are behaving much better...try to bring some of your fellow countrymen to other country and they will never do such thing like that...your fingers in one hand dont have the same size... but you're right when it comes to management, cinema management should implement strict adherence on etiquette to ensure all patrons will enjoy their viewing... i admire you for being true...good day....

sms, blogs, do a write up in Arraya/sharq dailies. You will definately change attitude of few

Audience niceties

Arrive Early ~ Plan your time carefully. You should anticipate and expect there will be traffic and crowds as others arrive for the show. Overestimate the time it will take you to arrive. Include time to find your seats, check your coats, visit the facilities and settle in well before the curtain is scheduled to rise.

Do Make Way ~ If you are closer to the aisle, do not get too comfortable if your row is still vacant. The easiest method to make way is to exit the row and allow others to enter. If that is not feasible, at least rise and fold in your chair so that others may pass. Given the spacing in many theaters, merely moving your legs to one side does not allocate enough room for most adults to pass without touching. When you are the one entering, do face the stage while edging down the row into your seat.

Observe Your Space ~ Clearly space is at a premium in most theaters. Do your best to keep all of your belongings and your body well within your real estate. If you have not checked your coat, your coat should not hang over the back of your chair into the aisle behind where you are sitting. Any packages and bags should be placed under your seat, not in the aisle. The allocation comes down to one armrest per customer.

No-no Noise ~ Your cell phone should be off, your jewelry should be silent and you will need to wait until intermission to open that hard candy. Even when you know every word to every song, you will need to save it for the shower. All distracting noises should be avoided so that the action from the stage can be heard.

Eat Outside ~ Plan ahead to have dinner first so that you are not starving during the performance. Or, have a snack before you come to the show if you plan on dining afterwards. Your neighbors should not be subjected to your chomping and chewing snacks or entrees during the show.

Watch Those Whispers ~ Theaters are designed for sound to carry. Do you best to keep your comments to yourself. Whispering to your neighbor distracts your neighbor as well as those around you. Your whispers may even distract the performers.

Polite Pictures ~ It is distracting and can be downright dangerous to see flashes from cameras during the show. Look for the theater policy. Most productions are lenient about snapping shots during the curtain calls. Video taping professional productions is never allowed.

Applaud Appropriately ~ At the end of acts, arias and certain songs, it is quite appropriate for the audience to show their appreciation. Clapping and even shouts of "bravo" are the usual demonstrations. Standing on your chair while whooping and whistling should be saved for sporting events.

Wait & Walk ~ As the show ends, take your time. The entire auditorium will need to empty. There will be those who move slowly and pushing will only make matters worse. You may stay in your seat and read the playbill, providing you allow your row-mates to pass, or you may turn on your cell phone and check your messages if waiting is too difficult for you. Once you enter the throngs streaming from the theater, do be sure to keep moving upon exiting. Stopping once you hit the street only creates

in fact not only in cinemas...everyday in our lives we should respect others as Qatar has grown to a multi national country from all walks of life. While driving, queuing in counter, etc, all these area will be pleasant if good manners are to be impart.

Yes this country belongs to Qataris but do not forget we share the same sun and moon together.

Once I had troubled conversation with the Traffic Dept in one of the counter, a gentleman wearing full white arabic dress(I presumed to be Qatari)intervenes and mediates between me and the staff. He speaks good english too. The incidents really make my day and changed my view towards Qatar. Thanks bro....

Very true, but Qataris are not the only people who do that. Irrespective of nationality there are a bunch of morons who are born to annoy others with such behavior. I wish I could tell them straight on their face to shut their **** up and watch the movie. . lolz

There is nothing more annoying than being sat watching a film that you've been looking forward to and some inconsiderate moron sitting behind you slurping his or her drink, rustling through their popcorn, opening sweets, whispering loudly, and then to top it all their phone rings. What gets me is they seem to think it's okay and everybody does this. They should be made to leave the theatre with a spot light on them as they walk out. LOL

Coughing, commenting, questioning, exclaiming, shuffling, unwrapping, slurping, chewing, gnashing, choking, grinding and phone calls are all unacceptable alternatives to just sitting still and quietly watching a movie.

It is indeed quite annoying and trust me it can get very bad when they actually put their feet up on the seat in front of them, so fcking disgusting i say, a bunch of rogues if i may add...some of them i m sure who are arrogantly equipped , infact well equipped, you just feel like standing up and beating the crap out of these little arrogant kids,.,

I'm pretty sure however, the more elegantly dressed, the more mature and older Qataris are more decent...

O well, fcku them i say, try and stay calm and watch the damn movie,

And TRUST ME, the freaking stupid Indians arent any better...LOL...at Doha Cinema for a nice movie, they have their stupid kids running all around the theatre like a freaking Relay Race or a Hurdle Race or a stroll in the park, and what do the parents do nothing just sit their azzes there...I say, come on folks, if your kid isnt ready to go to the Movies, then you need to get a babysitter, or sacrifice the movie, but dont come to the theatres and wreck others i say...LOL!!!

so the thought of banning them is indeed in our dreams...wishful thinking...

ok then, another option, there should have a separate movie houses where only qataris can go in ONLY..and let them have a party inside arguing/complaining to one another bout rocking the seat, phone backlights, phone ringing, laughing out loud, talking out loud...what you say?

since you started it... sure.. i stopped going to cinema in qatar.. it is disaster... you just cannot enjoy any movie. they are talking on the phone, coming and leaving in the middle of the film.. but worst of all when teens gathering in mixed groups gals/guys, and talking and joking and laughing during entire movie!

I cannot forget when i came to watch "Kingdom", this very deep, actually tragic movie, and this bunch of… had no interest to the movie whatsoever and kept laughing and talking on the phones and making noise by unwrapping their chocolate and whatever...they even couldn't sit properly, standing up, moving, changing seats constantly... it was disgusting! I almost was going about to leave.. how can you watch some serious film, since somebody is chatting and laughing nonstop??

I just don’t understand, why you have to enter the theatre with no any intention to watch the movie?? Mall is big, find some coffee shop, or some other recreational place and chat and laugh to death!

I understand your fustration and am happy you brought this up. You are Qatariu and complain about it. Good for you. We all feel the same and that is why I do not go to the cinema. I watch at home where I can put up the sound as loud as I want and if anybody wants to talk to me, I either pauze or tell them to come back later. Now my tv is not like the screen in the cinema, but a large screen is nice too.

As for the education of the Qataris in the cinema I recommend you write to the management of the cinemas or the cultural ministry that they ban the mobiles from entering the cinemas like they do for the ladies side of a wedding.

You could start a petition and I am sure many QLers will sign cos all of us are fedup with this messaging, calling practice that so many of your country men & ladies are practicing without regard for the other people.
