Abayaa / Thobe wearers

I'm curious to know...don't women feel hot (temperature wise for all the perverts out there) wearing the Abayaa...

And why do the men wear white and the women black? Is there a cultural reason behind the colour of the garments?

Let me make it clear that I ask this question with respect for your culture and personally think Abayaa's are quite beautiful. And the thobes make the men look oh so elegant. BUT its summer, don't the Abayaa's absorb heat like crazy?

If you've been asked this question many times before I understand...If one more person asks me if I take out my braids and re-do them every day I'll scream!

thank you my dearest friend amnesia!

I DO have an abaya of Qatari style, very well custom-made, with the amazing embroidery. This one on your pic has a great shape, and I love the shape of the sleeves too, but the design is a bit plain. Mine has also very nice design and colors of the stones and embroidery are just beautiful...

Red Pope,

isn't that a Halloween costume of witch? the only stick is missing..

according to my knowledge wearing the abaya and the covering of the face are to protect women from the eyes of strangers and from the harsh weather so the womens purity stays preserved

but it has become a cultural thing to many these days

In pre-Islam urban centers of the Arabian Peninsula veiling was seen as a sign of privilege and a luxury afforded to women who didn't have to work.

They were distinguished from slave girls and prostitutes, who were not allowed to veil or cover (apparently not even later in the Prophet's time), and nomadic and rural women too busy working to be bothered with something so impractical as a face veil and extra layer of clothing.

Most of the Qatari women here wear Abaya just for the sake of culture and tradition.. Not to mention the fact they are forced by their fathers, brothers, husbands and sons.. In the Arab culture women are ruled by men.

I don't want to take any names here but there is a particular famous Qatari woman who wears abayas and shellas (head scarve) when she is in Qatar but whenever she travels abraod, and she does a hell lot of travelling, she wears modern western outfits, skin hugging and sometimes even see thru and a itsy bitsy handkerchief type of cloth wrapped around her head with her ears and neck exposed so that she can show of her diamond studs and necklace.. Not only that, her daughter, also a public figure wears abaya and shelaa in qatar or the GCC but when she travels abroad, she doesnt even cover her hair at all, she leaves it all open in its full glory.. SO what i am saying here, without meaning to offend anyone, that abaya is not a part of religion any more but just a cultural thing.. I am a Pakistani but I wear jeans and tops when I go out here in Doha and at work I wear trouser suits.. But the day I land in Karachi, i only wear out tradtional shalwar kurta.. What does it say?

Why black ?

This is not religion nor tradition . It came in here when the industry started to sell cheap black materials . Then it spread .

originally - in the area women dressed colorfully : every tribe had his own colors - even there were some tribes in ARABIA where the women did not wear scarf . Qatari ladies used to have nice green ,red dress with golden decoration .

This is one reason . So wearing black is not keeping the traditions just the opposite : bending in front of the indusrty .

you guys are being misled.

This is actually a creation from Oscar De le Renta..

The abaaya is designed to allow multiple functions. it can cater for a pregnancy, from day 1 to the last moments.

It can act as a changing room. Allowing the clothes underneath to be changed whilst being completely covered.

It can act as a temporary shelter. just need a few tent pegs.

lastly, for perverts and others of such persuasion, it can allow others to "cohabit" without being notices.

It won't be a bad idea to wear a huge cape with two eyes in full bright red, then walk one of the malls downtown and act like "Black is no Good," for sure there is a lot of black abayaas to scare off and don't call me a Southern Dragon!!

Abaya should be shapless.....

By Aisha-Taweela• 25 Jun 2008 23:38
Aisha-Taweela

I started wearing a abaya about 8 years ago. I was in souq asiri waiting for one of the material shops to open. It was around 4pm and most of the shops were about to open. Many of the indians working in the shops were sitting on the fountain- When I walked past I could feel them undressing me with their eyes. I popped into the first shop that was open and bought my first abaya. I put it on and walked out. I did not possess a abaya previously as I had had converted to Islam but was still sorting out my life as a muslim and one has to take step after step. So I think it was Allah's way of telling me then that it was time for my abaya.

I have since bought and had many abayas made. Some are simple and some for special occasions are a lot more decortive. Now I would not think of going out without my abaya. If I would go out now without an abaya I would feel naked. Sometimes I have dreams and then I realize I do not wear my abaya, it is more like a nightmare.

Anyway the point is wearing an abaya will cover you. Underneath you can wear simple outfits or even pyama (when I take my daughter to school). Before I wore abaya, I would have to get dressed to go to the supermarket, now I pop into my abaya and ready. Also we have many different fabrics, winter & summer.

So yes, the abaya is maybe more of a cultural thing, but it has a islamic root and that is to cover up.

Britexpat I think so , they must have forgotten the reason for putting on abayas or they simply don"t know why they wear it and Allah knows best .

The muslim women should be modest and not try to show off .....

I'm a convert masha allah, I was a born Christan and I didn't really know , why we do the things we to as Christan , we just do them because everybody is doing it or because , our forefathers been doing this and so on..... but WHY never really knew why.....

So i guess being a born Muslim will be the same thing for some of them if not for most of them !?

it's a religious obligation for a believing women!

And so we obey, because

Allah says:

An-Nur - 24:31

And tell the believing women to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts, etc.) and not to show off their adornment except only that which is apparent (like palms of hands or one eye or both eyes for necessity to see the way, or outer dress like veil, gloves, head-cover, apron, etc.), and to draw their veils all over Juyubihinna (i.e. their bodies, faces, necks and bosoms, etc.) and not to reveal their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husband's fathers, .........

Truly woman are beautiful ,so they have to cover that beauty , her beauty is only for her husbands eyes!

so the abaya should be plain and don't get the attention of others ,it does not have to be black!!

here and in Saudi it's more culture to wear the black abaya.

By the way I don't sweat any more then normal with abaya! You know what I mean, when it's hot it's hot!

ha… This is the trick.. Abaya itself is so elegant and makes you feel so different... you just cannot to put “whatever” underneath…lol… and also when you step, your underneath, at least the bottom of it, shows up.. so you don’t want to spoil the look by wearing something inappropriateunderneath… and by the way, donno why, but I always wear the best perfume with abaya…

and yes, Gypsy, it doesn’t make any difference with other clothes in a matter of heat.. moreover, some fabrics even makes you feeling cooler while touching your skin..

althou in variation in style and colors. But white always signifies purity and black as abaya is to cover the goodness of the women.. . so to speak. They really look elegant with their attires. And they are comfortable with it in the same way that we are comfortable with our traditional dresses.

What really made me think sometimes is the covering on their faces. What are they hiding, most of them are really very beautiful but I know its somewhat related to Islam.

Anyway, they look astonishing in their attire
