Abayaa / Thobe wearers
I'm curious to know...don't women feel hot (temperature wise for all the perverts out there) wearing the Abayaa...
And why do the men wear white and the women black? Is there a cultural reason behind the colour of the garments?
Let me make it clear that I ask this question with respect for your culture and personally think Abayaa's are quite beautiful. And the thobes make the men look oh so elegant. BUT its summer, don't the Abayaa's absorb heat like crazy?
If you've been asked this question many times before I understand...If one more person asks me if I take out my braids and re-do them every day I'll scream!
which picture, Happy? if you are talking about Red Pope's pic, yes, you are right and that's what i said, it is NOT an abaya, it is a Halloween costume for the Witch...
sorry but i think the woman in that picture looks like a witch .
thank you my dearest friend amnesia!
I DO have an abaya of Qatari style, very well custom-made, with the amazing embroidery. This one on your pic has a great shape, and I love the shape of the sleeves too, but the design is a bit plain. Mine has also very nice design and colors of the stones and embroidery are just beautiful...
Red Pope,
isn't that a Halloween costume of witch? the only stick is missing..
according to my knowledge wearing the abaya and the covering of the face are to protect women from the eyes of strangers and from the harsh weather so the womens purity stays preserved
but it has become a cultural thing to many these days
shucks! i cant add the pic. how do i do that?

In pre-Islam urban centers of the Arabian Peninsula veiling was seen as a sign of privilege and a luxury afforded to women who didn't have to work.
They were distinguished from slave girls and prostitutes, who were not allowed to veil or cover (apparently not even later in the Prophet's time), and nomadic and rural women too busy working to be bothered with something so impractical as a face veil and extra layer of clothing.

Awesome! I have one but it looks so awkward on me, unlike on the Qataris. They look gorgeous!

You must be talking about my neighbor who has large stocks investments with Qatar Airlines and she travels a lot with them. i saw her, the other day walking to the swimming pool wearing the abayaa, while showing her baby fat body in a pink bikini.
More Acceptable
Most of the Qatari women here wear Abaya just for the sake of culture and tradition.. Not to mention the fact they are forced by their fathers, brothers, husbands and sons.. In the Arab culture women are ruled by men.
I don't want to take any names here but there is a particular famous Qatari woman who wears abayas and shellas (head scarve) when she is in Qatar but whenever she travels abraod, and she does a hell lot of travelling, she wears modern western outfits, skin hugging and sometimes even see thru and a itsy bitsy handkerchief type of cloth wrapped around her head with her ears and neck exposed so that she can show of her diamond studs and necklace.. Not only that, her daughter, also a public figure wears abaya and shelaa in qatar or the GCC but when she travels abroad, she doesnt even cover her hair at all, she leaves it all open in its full glory.. SO what i am saying here, without meaning to offend anyone, that abaya is not a part of religion any more but just a cultural thing.. I am a Pakistani but I wear jeans and tops when I go out here in Doha and at work I wear trouser suits.. But the day I land in Karachi, i only wear out tradtional shalwar kurta.. What does it say?

Why black ?
This is not religion nor tradition . It came in here when the industry started to sell cheap black materials . Then it spread .
originally - in the area women dressed colorfully : every tribe had his own colors - even there were some tribes in ARABIA where the women did not wear scarf . Qatari ladies used to have nice green ,red dress with golden decoration .
This is one reason . So wearing black is not keeping the traditions just the opposite : bending in front of the indusrty .
sorry but not everyone could have a supermodelfigure.
if you have one, mabrook.but dont make coments like this about others which are not blessed to be perfect.

you guys are being misled.
This is actually a creation from Oscar De le Renta..
The abaaya is designed to allow multiple functions. it can cater for a pregnancy, from day 1 to the last moments.
It can act as a changing room. Allowing the clothes underneath to be changed whilst being completely covered.
It can act as a temporary shelter. just need a few tent pegs.
lastly, for perverts and others of such persuasion, it can allow others to "cohabit" without being notices.
why wouldn't we make an ABAYA party instead???
all, men and women in ABAYAs!
without the headcovering, decorated, or skintight,or fastened at the neck but open down the front, usually with jeans on.

Sincerly
Confused from Doha1
There are some local national women here dressing in an 'abaya' that have lost the plot....
It has definitely become a cultural tradition for some in Qatar rather than a religious one as it was meant for the Muslims...

i bought this lovely abaya some yrs ago and i call it lil red riding hood, it is black chiffon on the outside and on the inside is red chiffon and it has a cape too- oh so lovely
It won't be a bad idea to wear a huge cape with two eyes in full bright red, then walk one of the malls downtown and act like "Black is no Good," for sure there is a lot of black abayaas to scare off and don't call me a Southern Dragon!!
Just kidding

Abaya should be shapless.....
http://www.salaficlothing.com/chador.htm
I started wearing a abaya about 8 years ago. I was in souq asiri waiting for one of the material shops to open. It was around 4pm and most of the shops were about to open. Many of the indians working in the shops were sitting on the fountain- When I walked past I could feel them undressing me with their eyes. I popped into the first shop that was open and bought my first abaya. I put it on and walked out. I did not possess a abaya previously as I had had converted to Islam but was still sorting out my life as a muslim and one has to take step after step. So I think it was Allah's way of telling me then that it was time for my abaya.
I have since bought and had many abayas made. Some are simple and some for special occasions are a lot more decortive. Now I would not think of going out without my abaya. If I would go out now without an abaya I would feel naked. Sometimes I have dreams and then I realize I do not wear my abaya, it is more like a nightmare.
Anyway the point is wearing an abaya will cover you. Underneath you can wear simple outfits or even pyama (when I take my daughter to school). Before I wore abaya, I would have to get dressed to go to the supermarket, now I pop into my abaya and ready. Also we have many different fabrics, winter & summer.
So yes, the abaya is maybe more of a cultural thing, but it has a islamic root and that is to cover up.
Aisha-Taweela
Britexpat I think so , they must have forgotten the reason for putting on abayas or they simply don"t know why they wear it and Allah knows best .
The muslim women should be modest and not try to show off .....
I'm a convert masha allah, I was a born Christan and I didn't really know , why we do the things we to as Christan , we just do them because everybody is doing it or because , our forefathers been doing this and so on..... but WHY never really knew why.....
So i guess being a born Muslim will be the same thing for some of them if not for most of them !?
Has your pet eaten contaminated food?
no not all of them but most of the women take abaya as atradtion thing not as it should be in islam...
and not only the abaya there r too many things also but in the end it depends on the persone himself..
Take me to the sea and bring me back thirsty...!!!
especially if their abayas have those intricate designs...very elegant.
I do have an abaya, given to me by my former (Qatari) sponsor when I came to Doha. It is simple and a size too big though. I very seldom wear it as I have no other occassion to wear the abaya to.
I remember XENA having one of those ABAYA hunting trip last year with AISHA (where is she, anyway?)during one of those QL ladies outings before QL groups started. Maybe we could do some ABAYA HUNT/SHOPPING one of these days?
Red_Pope speaking of bikinis...there's a new bikini out for men...seriously. Maybe you and a couple of other QL males can go for a fitting and we'll hold a special kind of beauty pageant. ;-)
pope, great idea!! what a beauty pageant that'd be.
black has become relgious symbol. Our outer garment should be any colour lol we all ended up like crows
it's a trap, do not answer... :)
Thanks for all your replies-much appreciated...Im a little less ignorant now ;-)
With all due respect, are you suggesting that women , in an Islamic society are ignorant of the religious reason behind wearing an abayya ?
i ment well said...
Take me to the sea and bring me back thirsty...!!!
Pope,Pope...no cure for you.. :)
don't understand you?
Why can someone in Qatar host a beauty pageant? Identical too: Hooters International and Miss Universe, the main event will be, only wearing only Bikinis underneath those tight Abayaas dresses?
That will be a show to watch.....
I know, that I'm just dreaming about it.
"President Bush wants us to cut the amount of gas we use.

sa7 elsanek....
Take me to the sea and bring me back thirsty...!!!
it depends on the person who wears abbaya, even if designed abbaya as long as its decent really looks gorgeus, but if they wear this tight and showing there legs whats the purpose of abbaya......
do not wear abayas , never been to Saudi....
I guess they don't strongly believe ?!?!?
And as for here , like I said it's more culture and or tradition to wear the abaya , I have the feeling they are ignorant of the religious reason behind it.
So to them it has become a fashion and a show , which is the exact opposed of what the abaya suppose to do.
The French abayas look quite elegant.
Sometimes they conveniently hide the not-so-slim physique. But other times they add magic an seductive air...especially with a hijab coming up from their chin.

I saw the film in the 70s...
Doha Airport..
First time here:
" - Oh my god..soooo much Ninjas!!!"
" and look how many brides..."
In Saudi , every woman wore ababyya, except Sudanese women...
WHY?
umm-salayum : you say "abaya should be plain and don't get the attention of others"..
Here, most of the abbayyas have deigns on them , so they stand out or the ladies wear them tightly..
it's a religious obligation for a believing women!
And so we obey, because
Allah says:
An-Nur - 24:31
And tell the believing women to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts, etc.) and not to show off their adornment except only that which is apparent (like palms of hands or one eye or both eyes for necessity to see the way, or outer dress like veil, gloves, head-cover, apron, etc.), and to draw their veils all over Juyubihinna (i.e. their bodies, faces, necks and bosoms, etc.) and not to reveal their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husband's fathers, .........
Truly woman are beautiful ,so they have to cover that beauty , her beauty is only for her husbands eyes!
so the abaya should be plain and don't get the attention of others ,it does not have to be black!!
here and in Saudi it's more culture to wear the black abaya.
By the way I don't sweat any more then normal with abaya! You know what I mean, when it's hot it's hot!
Is a scary thought, that woman look and feel sexy inside those Abayaa!
Maybe, the Ninja mutant team from hell are more passionate in dressing differently.

some women look sooooo sexy in the abayaa!!!
if it was meant to divert attention away i can tell you it ain't working.
Could men wear the Abayaa in many patterns and colors?

I am always disappointed to find them wearing Jeans underneath!!!
You've lost me.. Are you saying that the colours are used to differentiate between men and women ?
let me clarify u my frend women and men r equal not identical,if u say identical then say a man to produce baby and woman to guard family, both r as if scored 90 marks in subject but one student has some answers wrong so the other has those right but score is 90...-->men wear white coz they work and woman shud get out of home when its extremely necessary for her,and black hides her all beauty and doesnt seem attractive.
@philly, uh the Prophet wore a cream thobe not white.
There are many colours of thobes. Some young guys where colourfull thobes now.

ha ha ha .."What are they hiding, most of them are really very beautiful.."
that's what the are hiding ( or supposed to hide) - their beauty!! did you think they suppose to hide their ugliness???.. may be some of them.. you never know..lol..
"When i wear my abaya, I look completely different, i move different, I even feel different..."
i'm not even going to say anything at all.......Shhhtuuum.
ha… This is the trick.. Abaya itself is so elegant and makes you feel so different... you just cannot to put “whatever” underneath…lol… and also when you step, your underneath, at least the bottom of it, shows up.. so you don’t want to spoil the look by wearing something inappropriateunderneath… and by the way, donno why, but I always wear the best perfume with abaya…
and yes, Gypsy, it doesn’t make any difference with other clothes in a matter of heat.. moreover, some fabrics even makes you feeling cooler while touching your skin..
althou in variation in style and colors. But white always signifies purity and black as abaya is to cover the goodness of the women.. . so to speak. They really look elegant with their attires. And they are comfortable with it in the same way that we are comfortable with our traditional dresses.
What really made me think sometimes is the covering on their faces. What are they hiding, most of them are really very beautiful but I know its somewhat related to Islam.
Anyway, they look astonishing in their attire
"dgoodrebel will always be the rebellious good one"
When we were in Saudi.. My wife wore an Abaya and said that the best thing was that you could wear whatever you wanted underneath.. Didn't always have to dess up to go out..
Some Muslim men wear white thoubs because the prophet Muhammed wore one. By doing this, they try to follow his example. Others wear it because it because of culture and tradition.
From what I've been told they actually find them quite cool. The less direct sun that touches your skin the cooler you are, and they don't have to wear anything under them.
