Qatar Foundation (QF) Chairperson HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser led National Sport Day activities at QF’s Education City as thousands of community members came together to promote sports and fitness as a vital aspect of daily life.
The facility was transformed into a vibrant sports and activities hub, hosting many inclusive events to promote sport and wellness. Exciting events like the Education City Triathlon, featuring swimming, cycling, and running, and the Education City Run, added colour to the proceedings.
Sheikha Moza flagged off the cycling part of Education City Triathlon, and also toured different activity areas along with QF Vice-Chairperson and CEO HE Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani.
Meanwhile, the Education City Stadium, which was the setting for a range of women-only activities, attracted a large number of participants.
Sheikha Hind, along with para-athlete and Volkswagen Middle East’s brand ambassador Zainab Al Eqabi, awarded the winning teams in the Women’s and Girls’ Football Initiative, sponsored by Volkswagen Middle East.
“As a Volkswagen ambassador and a passionate advocate for sports and wellness, I believe that staying active isn’t just about physical health, but also strengthens our minds, fosters a sense of community, and inspires positive lifestyle changes,” said Al Eqabi.
Volkswagen Middle East-sponsored activities in Education City were designed to meet the needs of all members of the community. The Women’s Fitness Challenge involved an exclusive obstacle course for women.
“The response from women participants was overwhelmingly positive. There was a 140% increase in unique participants this time, compared to previous years,” QF’s Communication Outreach Specialist Dana El Ghazal was quoted as saying by The Peninsula.
She attributed the increase in women’s participation to exclusive facilities.
“We wanted to ensure we’d facilities that are exclusive to women to maximise their participation and foster a safe space where they can excel. This sudden surge of interest is a testament to our commitment to creating an inclusive and engaging community and environment, specifically tailored to women,” she said.
“We’re transforming the Education City Stadium to become a hub for women to participate in sports regularly. We’ve a rich calendar of weekly community programmes at Education City that are tailored to women. It includes volleyball, basketball, football, swimming, squash and tennis, among others,” said El Ghazal.
The Family Zone at Oxygen Park provided a unique blend of team challenges and fun activities, and an array of fitness classes were also offered to participants.
