Motorists can now avoid Traffic Department visits after accident

From now on, motorists involved in an accident will not need to visit the traffic department anymore to collect documents for repair.

As per existing procedures, the documents are taken to the insurance company that has provided motor cover to the car of that motorist who has caused the accident.

The traffic department will now forward details of accidents and the vehicles involved to insurance companies concerned directly.

For this purpose, the traffic department has set up an electronic link with all insurance providers in the country that offer motor insurance cover.

Details of an accident such reference number, and the number of the vehicle to be repaired as also what damages have been caused that need to be fixed, will be sent to insurance companies through the above electronic link.

These details will be taken by traffic officials from the notes of traffic inspectors made at the site of the accident.

Then, an SMS will be sent by the traffic department to the motorist whose car is damaged, so he can go directly to the insurance company for repair procedures.

Needless to say that the new system being introduced will help save the time and effort of motorists whose cars are involved in accidents.

The Ministry of Interior said in a press statement yesterday this is a key step towards making their work paperless to help save time and effort of people who need the services of its various departments.

The statement, however, didn't say what happens if an accident is minor and no traffic inspectors turns up at the site.

The General Directorate of Traffic has entered into a tie-up with the insurance companies to establish the said electronic link.

The agreement was signed by Brigadier (Sheikh) Abdul Aziz bin Jassim Al Thani, director of traffic patrol and investigation department, and the managers of insurance firms. [The Peninsula]

You will have to stay put until the traffic police officer shows up at the site and assess the damage and decide who's at fault?

A very good step indeed. However, what happens if there is hit-and-run vehicle involved of if a vehicle has been hit while it was parked say during the night and the other party quietly escaped? Appreciate, a clarification for such a situation.
