Green Island: Qatar's first community-driven recycling hub
To commemorate Global Recycling Day, Qatar Foundation (QF) announced plans to build Qatar's first recycling hub within Education City in partnership with Seashore Group.
As a start Green Island will begin with six streams of recyclables: paper, plastic, aluminum cans, e-waste, batteries, and organic waste. The project is partly powered by solar panels and will be convenient to reach by public transportation, including the EC Tram.
Project site work has begun, and the recycling hub will likely open by October, if not earlier. Milaha, one of the largest maritime and logistics companies in the Middle East, has donated 95 end-of-life containers to Green Island, which spans over 8,000 square meters.
Additionally, Green Island will have research labs, themed gift shops, an open exhibition and lecture space, organic cafes, and a farm-to-table restaurant featuring a vertical farm located on site.
The project will also include an art gallery for students to display recyclables and a 3D printing lab for printing with recycled concrete.
Nawal Al Sulaiti, Sustainability Manager at QF, said: "It is no secret that there is a gaping hole when it comes to recycling in Qatar and the desperate need to fill that gap and do more to empower the community, particularly the younger generation, and arm them with the tools needed become environmentally conscious citizens, is what led to the birth of Green Island."
"It is easier to get youth to take up new habits when compared to adults, and these youth can then get their families to follow. Their power to bring about change is huge and is the driving force we need to cultivate a sustainability mindset in Qatar," she added.
Ouassim M. Alami, Strategic Initiatives Advisor at QF, said: "Education and awareness will be a primary objective of this project; a lot of effort has been put into making it an interactive and active learning experience. Each container will have a large screen mounted on it which will allow community members to see the various steps that a certain type of waste goes through as it is recycled."
The Island was envisioned by him as a place for people engaged in the environment to find their place. Recycling awareness sessions are held, as well as lectures by specialists and environmental researchers, all of which contribute to Qatar's environmental efforts.
