OK as I said I concede your expertise, I guess I was confused by the fact the OP asked about a "work entry visa" not just an entry visa.

mary, you confuse two things.

VISA (any type of visa) is given to the person in order to authorize his/her entry into the country (any country). No one person cannot enter any country in the world where he/she is not a citizen (or valid resident), without a visa. There are different types of visas depends on purpose of entry. It can be tourist visa, can be student visa, can be business visa, can be medical visa, can be family visa, can be work visa... Name of the visa reflects the purpose of visit. Another thing is that citizens of certain countries are allowed to obtain visas on arrival in some particular country, based on the agreement between these two countries. But anyway a VISA is obtained this way or another. Or, like in EU, citizens of certain countries (based on the agreement) are allowed to travel within EU territory without visa. But again, EU was created as a single entity with single currency and single territory for movements.

So bottom line is to enter any country in the world one has to have a permission of authorities (in this way or another). This is general introduction into the immigration rules and procedures in the entire world.

Now about Qatar in particular.

When a person is hired from his original country by company in Qatar, he definitely needs some visa to be able to enter Qatar, correct (see above)? Which type of visa (out of mentioned above)reflects the purpose of WORK in qatar? Right! WORK visa. So WORK visa is issued to the person to enable him to enter Qatar. Work visa is a permit to enter qatar for purpose of work, and this is 1-time entry visa (permission).

Now. Once the employee is in Qatar, he needs not only to work here, but also to be able to maintain a normal long-term life, i.e. to have a bank account, to buy a car, to place his kids in the schools, to have a medical coverage, etc., etc., etc. For THAT purpose the employee obtains permission for his Residency status, meaning that person is residing in Qatar for limit period of time with certain privileges as a resident. At this point so-called Residence Permit for purpose of Work, is issued. The person must meet certain conditions and therefore asked to undergo his medical test and fingerprints. Once both are cleared, Residence permit is stamped into his passport.

Now. WORK visa is a visa and is used to enter Qatar.

RESIDENCY is a permission to reside in the country for limited time for purpose of work (if issued based on Work visa) or as a Family member (if issued based on Family visa).

Well.. I think i have to start charging for my counseling..

..if my hub knew what I am "preaching here" for FREE, he would kick my a$$ big time..lol..

I'll concede Qatarisun's expertise in this matter - I would like clarification on why most have to go through a medical check and finger printing in order to obtain a work/residency visa? And if they fail these, they cannot take up the offered position?

Qatarisun is right, as she always do on most of the questions posted in QL. The best thing to do Joolstwo is to wait for 6 months as the work visa will automatically be cancelled.

right, Advertisment , the rule is simple: once the person already has any type of VALID visa, same type of visa cannot be obtained. Each type of visa has its period of validity. For Work visa it's 6 month. So if you don't enter Qatar during this time your visa will be simply expired. If you want to come earlier on another company's Work visa, ask your current sponsor to cancel your valid work visa, this can be done easily.

trouble is, I don't think they will

Thanks for that. I been offered another job by a different company, but doesn't look like I can get a new visa unless the original company cancel the first one, is that correct?

don't listen to first two above. I just cannot understand why people comment on something that they have no clue about. If i don't know one thing about football, why would I pop up with the explanation of the rules of this game, just because my brother used to kick a ball when he was in grade 4?? Company does issue a Work visa for you prior to your arrival. The only thing, in your particular case ( as you are Brit), Company might invite you on the visa on arrival, and later to issue a Work visa for you.

But for the nationalities who cannot obtain a visa on arrival Wokr visa a MUST in order to enter qatar. (Otherwise how the hell they would enter Qatar, on what TYPE of visa? "Offer Letter" is NOT a type of visa, in no one country in the world).

So anyway, since the Company has sent you a copy of yoru Work visa and you don't want to take up the job, just do not come. But it is better to inform them, so that they could cancel your visa. If you don't want to inform them about it, your Work visa will be expired in 6 months automatically. Nothing else will happen.

Is it possible to get it cancelled so I can apply for another one?

Once a paper visa is issued in your name either from a person or a company maybe its visit visa or work visa if you dont turn up no problem at the same time but later on if some other company try to accuire a visa for you then there will be issue of previous visa, as this visa needed cancellation, or else other company visa will not be issue.

Its my personal experience. in 2007 i had a visit visa but then i didnt visited qatar & later in 2008 when i got job i faced problem as my visit visa was not cancelled, so first i got my visit visa cancelled.

You will get a work visa only if you arrive in Qatar as mary said and pass the medical.Your entry permit gets cancelled if it goes past the arrival date and you will have to re apply for another entry visa.

So far as I know, you don't have a work visa until you arrive and pass the medical and fingerprinting. All you have is an offer letter visa being dependent on passing the former
