New residency law for Qatar expatriates by 2010

A new residency law for expatriates living in Qatar will be made public by the end of this month or early next year, a senior official has said.

The Ministry of Interior is also looking at stricter implementation of sponsorship regulations once the new regulations are published, Col Fahad bin Nasser al Nuaimi, director of the Expatriates Affairs Department said in comments published on Sunday.

Speaking at a dialogue with a group of Indonesian expats, he said that sponsors or employers must hand over personal documents such as passport and ID to employees as they are no longer entitled to keep them, reported the Qatar Tribune.

The new law, officials added, would make it compulsory for a new expat worker to report to the Medical Commission within seven working days from the date of entry to complete the procedures of residence permit. Under the old law, they had 90 days to report.

Under the new regulations, an expat whose residence permit has been cancelled must leave the country within 90 days from the date of cancellation.

A step in the right direction...but...

Take the initiative Qatar and completely reform your barbaric exploitative and uncivilised sponsorship laws. Scrap exit permits; how dare you tell me i can't go home? Sort out your medical screening system; I dont trust you not to keep DNA database or do Tox SCreening without informing us. This is an infringement of human rights.

keeping the passport is the right of the owner and he has the responsibility for keeping it safe! so we are waiting for this fair law! and hope more will come!

There must be a law to make the employer has no right to cancel your residence!

Is there any chance of Doha for reducing/removing the ban of 2 years from the sponsor for people who have been termninated. This is really inhumane that they dont even provide NOC and treat employees like bonded labourers.

One of my friend has been suffering as he has been terminated and has a personal loan. He is willing to repay the bank loan by working here in Doha.

I heard that in Saudi Arabia they have implemented a new law that there is no ban for 2 years. (A person goes on an exit can come back on a different visa the very next day). UAE has a ban for six months.

Residency law must facilitate the bonded labourers not to strengthen the fist of the mighty sponsors.

Thats the norm for every country to upgrade or improve immigration law for the benefits of every one. Completion of 7 days for a medical/residence permit benefits the applicants against the 90 odd days where one feels hold up to know if you are accepted or not.
