New Bahrain labour law stirs hornet's nest
Manama: Bahrain's move to become the first Gulf state to scrap the controversial sponsorship system for expatriates, likely to be hailed by rights activists, has sparked concerns among the business community and the federation of trade unions.
Labour Minister Majeed Al Allawi on Monday said Bahrain would implement a new labour law on August 1 that allows foreign workers to switch jobs without their existing employer's consent. "This is the end of the sponsorship system, which does not differ much from slavery," the minister said.

Can we expect the same in Qatar soon?????
yalla to Bab Al Bahrain well thats gr8 news
of confident for Bahrain government to impose the move.
as it said:
"The presence of cheap Asian workers is a contentious issue in the region. They are seen distorting the labour market to the disadvantage of nationals, yet Gulf governments invite them on the assumption that nationals will not do many jobs. Bahrain’s population grew to about 1.05 million in 2007 on an influx of foreign workers. There are about 500,000 Bahraini citizens. "

i hope it will happen to qatar as well...
Hiya - this has been discussed for the last couple of years and has not come into force - and even if it does it will not be followed...Its the norm this part of the world to have the "sponsorship" system..holding the passports and so on.. I dont see it happening...it means the workers would have too much freedom and they dont want that (the sponsors)... good if it does happen but dont see it...
Yes , its a great move by Bahrain. Hope all other countries within the GCC will follow.

Moving on is simple; it's what you leave behind that makes it so difficult .
Hope it's gonna be a good move... :)
