Actually Colorado has the death penalty, so I'm sure he'll get that. Although he's obviously VERY mentally disturbed, so what he probably needs is life in a mental institution.
However his punishment won't bring back the 12 people killed. It won't pull the bullets from the injured.
What would have helped is stricter gun laws so that one man couldn't purchase an arsenal most police forces don't possess.
If there had been stricter gun laws his attempts to buy that much weaponry would have raised a red flag with police and he could have been arrested before this happened. Or he would have been able to buy far less weaponry and explosives and thereby killed far less people.
