Islam wants people to be happy in their first marriage. Only God knows the human mind and body the best (not even humans know much about it). So He knows it is not a good idea to impose just one marriage on a man.
I do agree with you that very few people actually strike a balance and it is difficult also. However, it is still possible and if someone does not give equal rights to his wives, it is his own fault not of the religion.
