Nomad: My original shot came out like yours.(see below)
I have cropped the left part of the image because it looked blank.
But since it looked great, I wanted to fill the black area. so I pasted two more shots as layers in Photoshop(chose blend mode: multiply). One layer had darker blue than the other and it did not match with the others. So I added a layer mask to adjust the hue of the blue color. I noticed when I varied the hue, the image started to look like flames. So I ended up with those flame like colors. But the below picture is not edited. Only a few weaks on saturation and clarity...Hope you got the idea. If not, let me know, I will try do post a more detailed version on my blog..
BTW; have you used a speedlight? your's has good contrast and I like your pic... Add me if you're on flickr
