Surely the answer is greater awareness and a sincere desire of the police and judges to crack down on the abuses. It seems to me that part of the problem, however, is that sentences for violence here are far too light. If the guy gets punished with a fine and suspended or light sentence (usually the case in instances reported in the press), then he is free to take out his vengeance on the victim. What protection does she have? It reminds me of the UK a couple of generations ago, when this sort of thing was routinely swept under the rug.
