a man to take care of me. I wouldn't trust that he would not at some future point up and leave me/the kids. I've seen it happen far too many times to friends and acquaintances...and then the woman is basically screwed because then she has no work history to go out and get a job when she has to take care of herself and her family (meanwhile her husband has usually taken up with a newer, younger woman...and he's living large).

And unfortunately, it's not uncommon for men to not pay (enough) child support, and then the woman is left trying to take care of her family all on her own.

If a household can afford a nanny/housekeeper, more power to them. But like most of you, I, too, get irked when I see a mother who isn't working outside the house yet she still has little quality interaction with her kids, who are basically being raised by the nanny.
