in City Centre a few months back. I was window-shopping and was in the middle of a conversation with a Filipina saleslady when we heard a commotion in a nearby stall.
The other saleslady was indeed pretty with make up on and spiffy uniform.
A group of FILIPINOS came into the shop, looks around the merchandises the shops has and struck up a conversation just like this:
GUY: kabayan? (from same country?)
LADY: opo/oo (yes)
GUY: San ka sa tin? (what part of the country you from?)
LADY: sa ____ (I'm from ___ )
That's the usual ICE-BREAKER, like it's the norm.We didn't know what happened next after that ice-breaker but we just overheard the guy saying: "Porke ba pinoy kami ayaw nyo kaming kausapin?" (Is it just bcoz I'm a Filipino, you don't want to talk to us?). And of course, the lady responded nicely but she looked quite embarrassed by the ruckus and be the center of attention.
Next thing we knew, the guy and his friends were being escorted out of the shop. It appeared that the GUY might have:
1. asked for the LADY'S mobile phone number(?)
2. got rejected somehow or else
why would the GUY react that way...I didn't bother to ask, but it could only be the one or both or something else.
IMO...it's ok to be friendly with fellow countrymen (kabayan) but people should also consider that those salesladies are there to WORK meaning: GENERATE INCOME for THE COMPANY THEY WORK FOR and though they want to be friendly (as by nature), they are WORKING...ON THE JOB.
Just think, theyr supervisors are of other nationalities and it might be taken in a different way that they are NOT WORKING and just chatting...Their job might be jeopardized.
Put yourself in their shoes first before saying people are this and that...
From the way I see this topic...the OP is the one being ARROGANT...excuse my french, if I may say so.
