The words woman and man originated as follows.
mann = human being (neutral sex) wer = adult male wif = adult female
Therefore werman = adult male human being.
eventually the 'wer' designation was dropped leaving just man.
the wif from wifman ended up becomming the word we now call 'Wife' while 'wifman' became wimman which then was rounded off to become woman.
in latin there was a similar evolution homo = human being (neutral sex) vir = adult male
